z grandilfora?

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

I've had this for years and I had always thoguht this was z. grandiflora, but all of a sudden I have seed pods setting, are the pods a fluke or is this something else? Debbie? Picture is old and terrible, I haven't made a good habit of getting good pictures I'm afraid, I'm working on that.......sadly that relies on me remembering to take the darn camera with me while I'm outside! I will get out there and get a pic of pods in a minute.

I got a pic of a pod and a pic of a new bud coming up......now I'm charging my battery so I can upload them, sigh.

While I'm waiting.......I think this is habranthus, but which?

Another source for rain lily http://www.buried-treasure.net/productscat.php?catid=69

az--first one is Z grandiflora, see the way the stigma flops over to the lower right? Z grandiflora always does that--a good way to distinquish is from Z macrosiphon or 'Ruth Page'

2nd is Hab robustus

the little jewel from Marie (I recognize all of mine no matters where they end up--lol) is Z lindleyana

--sorry I was busy this weekend ;)

and there is another excellent source for Rain lilies dale that has varieties neither of those 2 have.....

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

lol Debbie...I know where a good source is...I will probably order from there next year....there's a h. tubispathus (so?) that's calling my name! Thanks so much for the ID's. Nothing I hate worse than not having an accurate ID. I was sure that was grandiflora, just knew they were supposed to be sterile, now there's pods, I hope they don't fall off, that would be very cool. So now....if it doesn't fall off, does that mean the pollen likely came from another plant? The only other one open at the time was the lindleyana. Am keeping fingers crossed! If it falls off it should do it today, I'll see.

nice rain lilies Dale and Kaleem!

Dale, I did splurge at PDN this year, was ordering something else and it seemed a shame to not splurge on others as well ;P

grandiflora will set seeds sometimes for me--esp if I put another Zeph pollen on it (which is what I usually do)--yours very well could be lindleyana; if you need germination instructions for rain lily seeds dmail me which your email address and I will send them to you--its a word document

I love that last shot of Z lindleyana--it fades to such a nice form in my opinion

I grow 3 forms of H tubispathus--probably my favorite form is H tubispathus var roseus, if opens like this shot--notice the striations on the outside of the buds? I think this is really nice...

then fades to this and holds the apricot color well

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Yes, that's what Ilike about that one, the color on the outside of the petals then the apricot color, it's so nice.

I will send you dmail...I'm not planning to hand pollinate soon, but probably will at some point and I'll take any pointers you are so generous to give Debbie :)

That last pic is actually z. 'confection', opens very limp, stays that way, and the petals are huge! Stays open for 2 days straight even during some very hot days here. So was 'pink panther'....is that a characterisitic for labuffarosea, to be open for longer?

I checked, all but one pod has already yellowed and I'm sure the last one will, too :( I will keep my eye now though!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

Oh, just reread, it was a document for germination lol They are so easy to germinate I think i can handle that :o) So far I have just spread them around on the ground and let them do their own things, has been pretty successful.

I noticed a seed pod on 'pink panther' BTW, that will be nice.

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

all the labuf's tend to not stay open as long for me as Z lindleyana but it could just be due to location where I have them (I keep Z labuf's all in complete wet shade); nice form on that one nonetheless...I've only got about 4-5 variations of Z labuf

H tubispathus var texensi is also blooming pretty regularly for me right now--straitions on that one a nice to, just another color

Zeph x 'Tenexio', Z x 'Batik' (probably my favorite hybrid for holding color), Z x 'Capricorn', Zeph macrosiphon, Zeph reginae, Z primulina, Hab tubispathus var roseus are all blooming now too--I'm still waiting on the late season Texas/Mexican species to kick in

a little rain would help ;)

OK--I'm off to size up and repot a bunch of Hymenocallis seedlings---quickly becoming one of my least favorite bulb species--lol--but the swamp lovers and the mexican species grow very well for me so I keep doing them

lol You do have a rain lily heaven there. That primula is another nice one I will likely 'need'.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

More pictures of what is blooming please Debbie :o)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

I concur!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

well, since you're twisting my arm, just a few....
and then if I don't get the kitchen cleaned up from this weekend, I might find myself living alone--lol

since we are on the Z labuf role here--this was maybe 3 weeks ago and its one of my Z labuf strains but its a biflorus bloom, kind of any oddity, I've seen it a lot on Hab's but seldom on Zeph. notice the fused stem?

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

my favorite hybrid Zeph x 'Capricorn'--this is the THIRD day blooms on this one--holds its color really well

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

another one I like a lot more than the "trendy reds" because they hold their color only about an hour down here--lol--is Zeph x 'Batik'. this is first day bloom

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

and Zeph x 'Batik' 2nd day

now if I don't go clean the kitchen and repot those Hymenocallis and Polianthes geminiflorus.....

Marie I've also got some crinums and Bessera elagans blooming now--I'll try to start a thread about what's blooming today over on the SW forum late this afternoon for you--also put some new fence pics as a background (one less "issue" to deal with now--lol)

3rd day blooms, that is so cool! Lovely blooms Debbie, thanks :) Hope you got the kitchen cleaned up lol for me it's vaccuming, it never seems to get done :(

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

and the dust....where does all this dust come from?
;)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

omg don't get me started on the dust lol

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Lynn you think you have problems, you should see my place!!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

I can't even imagine marie, it really is like a whole other world over there, you poor thing.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I would be happy to share my dust with anyone who wants some!!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

please, no more here =)

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Lol !! I promise not to send any your way !!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

well, no more for me either!

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

too bad our plants don't reproduce like the dust does....
=)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

lol I dunno, some of them do :(

west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

hello dolly--
amazing what a little rain will do for the rain lilies
=)
here's a pot of Zeph labuf, actually first bloom on these in 18 mo from seed--they show a lot of variability as seedlings--sometimes something interesting pops up with these

I'm putting a few in PlantFiles this morning, those are always different than the ones I put on the forum--make sure you watch the PlantFiles forum Marie since you like pics =)
little story here--put this pot on the front porch to let my friend (renting a room from me--he's the one I helped move, Marie) see rain lilies. put about 4 pots right there thinking he'd have to trip over them getting in the door--he did sarcastically (but with humor and winking) ask me about a week ago what did I plant around here....I said rain lilies, to keep it simple (he is a man after all). Last night on the way out the door to the movies I asked him "did you see my rain lilies?" he said "where" I said "look down" he says "oh those things". go figure.....
;)

here's a pot of Zeph reginae at the crack of dawn all budded up and no place to go--lol

zeph reginae opened up

we didn't get very much rain from dolly--all over the state its thought of being more of a blessing (drought breaker) than a problem. However, it did rain really hard for about an hour and a half Thursday night....just enough to fire off almost all my rain lilies and put most of my crinums into a second bloom

I grow 3 forms of Habranthus tubispathus--var roseus is up above, it generally blooms in the first half of rain lily season--the other two forms strattle the middle of the season, below is the plain old H tubispathus. I was surprised by the intense striations on these--the regular old South American form tends to be rather dull yellow-gold. These are also 18 month old seedlings, you can see they are rather short

Thumbnail by dmj1218
west Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

H tubispathus var texensi is also blooming again (taller and larger than above)--all of the H tubispathus variations are good re-bloomers
