Lilies for zone 4b?

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I have a lot of the basic colors of LA lilies, but I am longing for some more exotic kinds - most of the ones I like say zone 5 hardy. Does anyone here live in 4b and grow other than LA lilies?

Caitlin, my best suggestion is to watch and see what lilies our friends from Wisconsin and Minnesota post pictures of... With the right micro climate and enough mulch you might be surprised what you can get away with. I'm just a mile or two away from being in Zone 4b and I have no problems planting any lily that I want. My place is out in the country and it's pretty wide open to the cold North wind. All you can do is to experiment. Put the more tender lilies up closer to the house and mulch the heck out of them. :)

Thanks, that's encouraging!

I agree! My Amethyst Temples were so so until I gave them some additional compost, which I used as a mulch last winter (perhaps 4 inches). Flowers I had never known were there, beacuse they had been damaged by the cold - the lilies quadrupled. They had been there all along.
