Saw this first on my butterfly bush before it moved on to the rose campion flowers. Looks like a type of bee, but has a fan shaped dark "tail" and long dark antenni. Anyone know what it is?
CLOSED: Some sort of bee?
This is a clear-winged sphinx moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae); likely in the genus Hemaris - see http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/hthysbe.htm for an example. Some sphinx moths also may be called hummingbird moths because of their habit of hovering at flowers while sipping nectar.
Thanks Suunto, that sure appears to be it!
