CLOSED: Unknown cocoon

What would this have turned into?
I accidentally stabbed it, whilst digging in my garden this spring. It was no more than 6 inches down in the soil.
I added a penny to the photo for size.

Probably a moth, maybe a Hawk Moth, hard to know exactly, there are many that pupate in the soil.

thank you fly-girl and DonnaB.
It measures a little over 2 inches. I have never seen the caterpillar or moth, but i am on the east coast NC and my neighbour has sweet gum trees, so the identification fits.
What a bummer, I hate killing things, I let the swallowtail caterpillars eat my plants to the ground.
I saw my first Lunar moth about a month ago. that was spectacular.
