This was taken on July 14th in a cedar tree, Juniperus virginiana. I have not ever seen one before. I would say it was at least 3 1/2 or 4 inches long. Thanks, Patti

I suspect that this could be a Carolina saddlebags, Tramea carolina (Odonata: Libellulidae) - see http://farm1.static.flickr.com/38/125700687_ace7610243.jpg?v=0
A very similar species, the red saddlebags (Tramea onusta) occurs in the western US.
