Fancy ditch lily

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I found this growing in a ditch, what type of lily is this - native tiger?
Not a lot of them to be found from what I saw.

Yes it is the native Lilium michiganense, but not a tiger lily (bite your tongue!). Among the many common names is Michigan lily and Western Turk's Cap lily (a name that fits a plethora of lily species). They seem to like ditches. My first specimens in the garden opened today.

Now I remember why I wanted to get this lily.

I thought they looked like my Tiger lilies at home(LOL), but had less height and leaves.
Thanks.

There is always the possibility that I could be wrong, not seeing the entire plant, but it has definite American characteristics.

Scattered (alternate) leaves = Tiger lily
Whorled leaves = Michigan lily

Take a look at the flowers again. When you really get to know your lilies, you'll wonder how you could have mistaken it. To me, L. michiganense and L. lancifolium don't look at all alike.

Great picture of a beautiful lily! Seems a shame to waste them in ditches!

Disagreement here. I have introduced several people to the lily world, exactly because they found the "unknown beautiful flower" in a ditch.

Good point Leftwood!

Are they rare? I only saw a few in that area.

Here's another shot if that helps.

Rare, no. Common, no. Just the right amount of intrigue, I'd say.

Just a few lilies. My husband took this picture in our back yard.

Here is a tiger that just came up with these spider plants. Seems like things are just popping up this year.
