First try at hummingbird pictures
Hi Datura;,,
I'm using a Canon 10D dslr with a 20mm lens for these as a lot of these hummers are quite use to me being around them.. I have a few that are still gun shy yet but the biggest majority of them I can feed from my hands with an eye dropper...The biggest problem I encounter is trying to keep from over exposing the shots in the bright sunlight... You need enough light to freeze some of the wing action.. I tried using the flash but it just spooks the birds to bad.. The other thing is trying to get them use to the shutter noise when your shooting that close..That spooks them also but their getting use to the noise from the camera...
I find shooting at 800 iso and an f-stop of 11 works about the best without ending up with a lot of jpeg artifacts in the images.. If the sunlight is really intense, I can, at times move down to 400 iso.. If you can get a day with filtered sunlight, thats seems like the best light to shoot in when trying to get these kind of shots....
That is a stunning picture.
thank you for sharing that.... it's beautiful
Oh...that is...

Thanks for sharing!

Genna, nanny, and everyone;,,
Thanks for the comments.. Glad you enjoyed it....
A lot of the hummers have already left now... I think two adult males still here along with a bunch of young ones yet.... I look for the rest of the adults to be heading out any day now...Last year all of the adult males were gone by the end of July....

I just put in a hummer bed this spring & I've been so impressed with the number of visitors. I was surveying my flowers the other morning & I received a severe scolding. Apparently one of the regulars was telling me to get out. I backed off a bit & let him get his breakfast. Then a couple more came & were arguing over whose territory it was. I had never seen a live humming bird until just a few years ago, so this is all very exciting to me!!
I took tons of pics today... posted on picasa

Thanks! I love it. I am needing a few things that spread so that I can share with friends here on DG that have been so nice to share things with me...... so far, I haven't had anything spread to the point of having some to share, but I am just getting started. That last picture is gorgeous! Makes me think I have to obtain some of that.......
I am attempting to do some cuttings of it... lets see how it goes
I have posted some of these on the midsouth forum - so please excuse me if you are viewing them twice - but I was "invaded" the other day when I went home for lunch - had somewhere around 35 - 40 hummingbirds at ONE feeder trying to eat...it was if they were starving! Here are a few pics - I didn't manage to capture the large crowd in any one pic, did manage to get a slightly larger grouping on my camcorder, but there were so many of them going in so many different directions that it was interesting to try to capture on film (figuratively speaking since I no longer use film....) ^_^
I get so excited over one or 2 hummers, I probably would wet my pants if there were 35 or 40!
yeah me too... the most I have ever seen at one time was 4
Well it is not uncommon for me to have 5 - 6 on several feeders but this was like a black fog when they first started attacking the feeder....unlike anything I had ever seen but of course when I got back out with the camera they backed off and scattered - they really didn't leave like they usually would do but they just scattered everywhere. I had really wanted a picture of that "group" of HB's ... it was truly one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen - but the sound was unreal !! That hasn't happened since then, just back to my normal 3 - 5 at a time, so I assume they were a group that was migrating..... of course, with Ike on the way, they may get blown back up this way again!! ^_^
