This is my first try at using the zoom on my camera to take pictures of my hummers.
They were really flocking this day and it is so hard to hold the camera still enough.

=^..^=
First try at hummingbird pictures
Wow, you have a whole neighborhood of them! Way to go!
That is so cool! I am jealous. We don't have any hummers in our neighborhood. Apparently they don't come beachside, is what I've heard.
Terrie
That is TOOO cool and I am so jealous. I usually have them during fall migration, but never in numbers like that. Thanks for sharing.
Carla
My lord, Girl. : ) You have a whole flock of those things. : ) I have a whole 1(one). lol I'm jealous, too. : )
~Lucy
Thats very cool 9kitty!
So you're the one that has all of the hummers! LOL!! Those are great, even blurry. My DH said try the landscape setting if you have one. Also if that doesn't work, just focus in on one feeder. Wonderful experience I am sure!

Don't know much about them but read in several places hummingbirds are territorial. These sure aren't. Must be the good food.
oh, they are very territorial. You should see the 'fights'. Sometimes a single male will try to guard a feeder. Can't even eat for guarding.
This is why DH puts out so many, they just kind of give up on trying to guard all of them.
As the season gets later, there will be more and more. This is just a small group. LOL
Thanks for the compliments!
Susan
=^..^=
We can't even get one on a consistant basis!!
That's the way to handle the little ruffians 9Kitty...give them too much to fight over. Elegant solution.
Sheila...I've only had one here. Surprised me...zipped past the window to check out a dinnerplate dahlia. Be a great photo of one on a 10" dahlia but I doubt I'll ever be able to catch it.
Wow! What great pictures! I thought I was doing good with 5 or 6 little ones. Thank you for sharing the pictures.
Man, what are you feeding there!! In my dreams....
I am going to get down to my sister's tomorrow. She has a lot of them. Maybe I can get a picture there!
pm edited... Not a one at Sister's house! Maybe it was too hot.

i also have ONE hummer.
Good lord!! your preserving a species over there!
A.
That is amazing that you have soooooo many, as others have said. I have 4 feeders, but I've spread them out throughout my yard to sort of give them their own "territory". But maybe I'll get a few more and bunch them up and force them to play better with others LOL
Those are great pictures!!
Susan;,,
I know what you mean about trying to hold the camera still.... Try this some time!!... This little joker is so quick I couldn't get a shot of him drinking the sugar water I put in the bloom...I normally don't use auto focus but when your trying this trick you don't have much choice...lol
I just now am noticing some of the young ones here starting to try out the feeders...
Enjoyed your pictures.........Thanks...
Dave
Oh Dave, I love that picture!!! Thank you for sharing that!

Nice goin Susan, I'm up to two hummers lol I have five feeders out so far but need a group like you, that's a lota hummers!
Just curious as to why you don't add the red food coloring to the sugar water? I purchased two of the tiniest feeders and they were coming to them, so I then replaced them with one larger feed similiar to yours and they don't come anymore. The only visitors are ants.
It is believed by some that the food coloring maybe harmful to the birds. Almost all feeders have red on them, so it just really serves no purpose so why add it!
That's exactly it..the red dye is not good for them. I have feeders that have no red on them at all, and they still come to it. They do have little flowers on them, though.
I gave up on the feeder, till the flowers stop blooming. I hired a scrub jay to dance around with a hose on "mist" and wave a huge flower around but still no one came.
7:15 tho, almost on the dot,my one hummer visits my hot lips salvia. I'm being thankful for that.

For Hummingbird needs, I found the greatest website. They even have a little device to keep ants and bees out of your feeders. They work wonderful.

Last year we had a few hummingbirds visit our feeders, but this year we have a whole DROVE feeding at our house. I have three feeders up and it has gotten to the point where I am having to fill them almost every day. I tried my first ever attempt at getting some pics the other day. I have counted as many as 10 trying to feed at one time..... but I didn't have my camera ready then of course. I have noticed they feed very heavily in the early morning and late afternoon, I guess because it has been so hot here.
Here are some of the pics.... have a LONG way to go on photographing them well..... There are actually 2 in this pic, but one is behind the other.....

9kitty, I'm beginning to think you get a better hummer show when you install feeders together as shown in your pics. I have them all scattered and I just get ocassional visits, despite all my hummer plants, etc.
