They're about as bad as you can get; they are Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica; Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) - their larvae destroy grass roots, while the adult beetles feed on just about any vegetation. See http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1296/ for all the gruesome details.

This is a ‘good guy,’ it is a tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae; subfamily Cicindelinae); likely Tetracha carolina, a species widely distributed in South Carolina - see http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/insects/tigb/sc/104.htm for an image. Note that the pale markings on the wing covers can show considerable individual variation within the species. Tiger beetles, both as larvae and adults, are voracious predators on other arthropods. They used to be in a family of their own (Cicindelidae), but now are considered part of the ground beetle family.

How do you mark as solved TWICE??

You probably should have just started a new thread for the beetle, that would have made things easier for all.

Well, I didn't add it, but I know what you meant :-)
