Ok here ya go it is basically done as far as the pond making and set up all I have to do now is finish up with plants.
I made a visit to LouC and SheilaFW came over too
so I came home with the plants you see in the picture along with a fountain filter pump and lights from Sheila.
I just need to get some waterlilies and I want a cat tail in too LOL then it is just wait for everything to grow and fill in.
making a pond need advice Please
really cool. I love watching the process of a pond.
Janet
Thanks only thing now is getting plants to hide the back side under the waterfall so the liner is hidden LOL
Phyllis, did you get any of the multiple sedums I have? They adapt, grow fast, need nothing and will drape beautifully. Should have gotten at least 30 cannas and then the wood fern as well. It was just so hot I couldn't think. The creeping jenny would be ideal for the beginning. It grows in or out of the water. Also the moss rose is a killer. Meant that in a good way.
Just love it. It will be no time before you have looking like it has been there forever. Should have gotten a banana pup. Just couldn't think....
Christi
Christi I was just thinking of the moss roses I have that you gave me last fall and am already thinking of how to do the jenny over the rocks too ....I have cannas here I can always move but with it being so hot out during the day I wait until evening of early morning to do that ....and yes I have sedum stuck all over so can grab some of that too
I took some of my mondo grass and put it around the top edge of the rocks to fill in too with the EE's, cannas and ruella and the dang forgot the name already the white spike flower one and those are all in a half circle behind the rocks above to fill in the back side so you don't look past it to the back yard LOL
question though the EE's can I cut the m back and they will take off again? the ones Sheila gave me for the pond are still in the bucket of rain water by the house but by the time I got home with them the leaves had wilted bad and now are curled up so if I can cut them back I think I will do that and get them in the pond today ...have had to go find all the spots DH has put my extra pots for putting things in LOL
I am seriously considering jumping right into this pond business. My question concerns one of legal issues. My backyard is not completely fenced and that is where I want my pond. What is the liability when you put in a pond? How shallow could I have my pond but not be too hot for plant or animal. There is part shade but also sun. I am using boulders to create an overhang for shade. But before going any further I wanted to ask if anyone has addressed the problem of ponds being in open areas for possible harm to children.
AlabamaWoman: You can get exact answers on local pond ordinances from your zoning board or clerk. I think the rules are similar to owning a pool.
I read somewhere that two foot deep worked for warmer climates?
I think it was here that I read that:
http://www.pondrushes.net/
I don't know much about it, but doesn't mortar contain something that will leach into water and be bad for the fish or plants? I thought that was the reason for the foam vs mortar...
I agree that local ordinances will cover pond construction, just call your planning and zoning or city council.
As far as depth is concerned my first little pond was only about 16 to 18 inches deep and about five feet across. We have some pretty bitter winters and the pond can freeze over for a month at a time. I have never heated this one and had feeder goldfish from the baitshop. I thought that I would surely lose them in the winter but have never had a problem and they are ready to go each spring. this year I put a galvanized cattle pool in that spot that is a bit deeper and I will see how they do but expect them to be happy there.
Those EE's are tougher than you think. I had a pot of them that I brought in for the winter and thought were dead so I tossed them out in a pile of dirt and forgot about them. Walked by that pile a couple of months later and they were growing even though they had not had suplemental water or been planted in the dirt. They are in pot in the pond now and doing pretty well.
