take them
I GOT THEM!
I have to give him a call- last time I talked with him, I had
to put him on hold for the quail eggs I had in the bator.
Now, I have 5 polish, 13 mountain q, and today or tomorrow
I will have tx bluescale and Tenn reds in there! Here we go!
One thing I will never do again, and that's to raise 40+
coturnix in the house in cold weather! I just moved 14 to
an outside pen at 2 weeks old- I am happy for our heat
in that regard- cleaning brooders is not my favorite thing...
i'm gonna get me a bator i thinks
Yea!!! I got a hovabator, circulated air with an egg
turner- whatever you get- get a new one, and get a turner!
can't tell ya how nice it is to have a turner...I have now
gragee-ated to having a bator AND a hatcher- that way
I can set more than one kind, and at different stages.
get a bator get a bator..get a..
cool, now we have another enabler!
get TWO!
I will get a bator but will probably wait till this winter to get one and or bator hatcher. hopefully by then we will have electric to the barn and they can go in there. We USUALLY have mild winters so wont be a problem.
jordankittyjo,
4 yrs ago I bought a group of 10 keets .... 8 weeks old for $40 cost ... so you did maybe better than me. (within 2 weeks a feral cat ate 4 of them) They were Pearl Gray and Royal Purple. A few of my Royal Purple had the white flight feathers making them Pied ... technically. Since then they have had 5 hatches ... 3 that I've supervised. It is certain my guineas have a pure albino white forebear. I've added a Platinum roo 19 months ago in my 1st supervised hatch and now have 3 Platinums and also have a Buff Dundotte keet. I have 5 colors ... or technically 6 colors if you count the Pearl Gray with the white flight feathers. No question the blue shades of Guinea Fowl ... are coveted. I have a growing flock of the Buff and Platinum. They too are wanted ... perhaps as much as the Lavender - blue shades. I'm going to trade eggs with someone who has Lavender and Coral Blue Guinea fowl. It would be fun to have a dozen colors. Where I live ... if I didn't toss out feed for my egg laying chickens .... my guineas would forage - range a bit further out but I'd only really need to feed them 2-3 months of the year. Kelly, when mine start to lay i'll send some to you if you tell me how to sip them
jordankittyjo,
I'll do the same for you if you want to hatch out buff and platinum keets ! .... shipping eggs is sorta simple...... bubble wrap each egg till the bubble wrap is about 4 times the size. Use a USP Priority box ... mail in a 7-9 inch square sized box. fill in the gaps in the box with wadded up newspaper. I'd recommend wrapping the entire insides up with clear wrapping tape .... 2" wide. Some folks use the egg cartons with the bubble wrap but the egg carton is not critical.

ok kelly. i let you know when they lay. at what age do they start laying?mine are only 12 days old
well I ordered 25 today will be here next week..................
what kind?
str run I have no clue
be sure to show us when you get them
Oh you can be sure about that. :)
i'll be looking forward to it
I should get them next wednesday or thursday. I will keep them in the house for a bit then out to the brooder they go.
how old will they be?
jordankittyjo,
Your birds don't look quite that young to me ... more like a month old ... but it doesn't matter their age really. Photos can be tough to show details. They are soooo cute. You ought not expect eggs till next spring ... February or March I'd estimate. My birds lay sparingly and now they're laying elsewhere or not at all due to the heat so I expect mine to lay later this summer/fall. I know I had a clutch of eggs hatch a couple years ago in the late fall with snow on the ground when I found a keet running around with no hen to care for it. My oldest batch of keets is just about 10 days old and are about 3.5 - 4 inches tall. My 2nd clutch is only a few days old with the 1st group a whole week older. Kelly in Moxee
kelly how did you manage to create a new colour thats pretty big stuff do all the guineapeople know about this new colour u invented how did u do it
Josh,
This new color is/has been around but he experts deeply involved had not assigned a color name. I ended up discussing the "color shade" with someone who probably also has it but had not yet decided on a name. Guinea colors names are not terribly descriptive ... although the Platinum is close. I just assigned a name and published the name and showed a photo. I also told the fellow who indicated he may have the same color that I was naming it Platinum. He told me in print that he had not chosen a color name. I don't know what he was waiting for. I now have 3 of them ... a couple more than he has. Next year I'll have several more. Platinum color is .... 1 step from white toward tan or buff. There is a similar color 1 step from white toward lavender. Interesting! Kelly in Moxee
wow looks lik some one did there homework
Josh,
I let the Guinea people know .... the "so called experts" or at least self appointed experts (LOL). The color naming isn't all that big a deal. A new color seems to pop up every other year with Helmeted Guinea Fowl. Like I said ... in my profession ... I've been required to understand copyright, trademarks, patents and naming rights. Creating a legal name is basically a minor legality 1) be the 1st to publish 2) maintain publishing via usage. It does not require being registered somewhere special anywhere like in Holland at The Hague. I've been doing my homework for 30 yrs.

well done
jordankittyjo,
Every time I look at your original photo I am soooo jealous of the Lavender &/or Coral Blue keets you have. They are priceless .... so so pretty. My solace is the Platinum and Buff Dundotte keets. I've been able to add a color to the flock this year ... I should be delighted.

Kelly, thank you for the compliment. am still planning on sending you eggs when they lay
kathy
jordankittyjo,
Knock on wood ... the only way I'll not reciprocate is if I'm dead (my grandma passed away last yr at 104) and my mom is still with us at 88 in a few days. So count on a doz guinea eggs from me too. I'll make sure my Platinum Guinea roo is "the man" ... I'll be cooking his papa on the rotisserie so we won't have any other grown males to compromise the gene pool. Buy next spring ... I'll have 2 more Platinum adults and the Buff Dundotte. This ought to make for close to 50% of the hatch being Platinum or Buff with the other half being normal Pearl Gray & Royal Purple. I'll have an extra fw more guinea hens to lay eggs and collect them from as well. My 2 RP keets are extremely fair/light colored. They almost look like they are gonna have hues of White/Platinum all over.
I just read about a new color called Pinto ..... almost totally white combined with any one of several colors. The one I saw was 80% white with the remainder brown ... just like a Pinto horse.

i will look for it...
They love to gossip. We call them Chatty Cathys. Good luck.
do ginea fowl lik to sleep on the ground on a perch or in a tree??
lucky, guinea like to be up high. i think they sleep on a roost, though i've never looked.
kelly, i took the keets out of the nursery and put them in their permanent pen yesterday. they seem to enjoy it.
they fly up on the highest roost, then back down, then back up on the roost
get pics
josh, i'll take some in a bit.
hey kitty, what a great picture of your keets. We have one of the lavender and one pearl and they look to be about the same age. Can't wait to see new pics!
Christy
