Finally I can post something instead of just lurking and drooling over all the lovelies! A Dg'er sent me some Jmg's in a newbie share. I received seven seeds with a lovely picture of what to expect in the seeds. I was a little to anxious this spring and set them out when the temps had a few dips in the high 30's and they did NOT like that at all. Only two plants survived. one with a fig like leaf and one with variegated foliage. I just got my first bloom from the figleafed one, and I was so surprised! How lovely it is! It is one with divided petals. So here is my first jmg bloom ever! Does this one have a name?
Japanese Morning Glory first bloom for me!
Nice one!!! :-)
I can't remember, but did you happen to get these seeds from me? If so, that one is Fuji Hot Pink Frost or some variation of it. Though it should have the variegated leaves. Hmmmm ...
Don't know becky if I did. They came in a newbie mixup swap. Nicely packaged with a picture of the flowers that could be expected, but no names of the types. Just a pic of the flowers. If you did send into the swap, then thank you! This one has just green figshaped leaves. My other one is variegated foliage.
The leaf shape and color is exactly like Rosita, but not the split flowers. Hmmm...
The mystery plant has blooms that resemble several MG's i.e.,
The bloom looks closest to a red sunsmile, but the leaves don't seem to match up...

A red Sunsmile...if it is a dwarf plant...
no entries for the sunsmile red, violet or chocolate yet...

This entry for the "Sunsmile Mix" is in error
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72397/
as the "Sunsmile mix" is known to produce dwarf plants and consistently produces blooms with a white tube and white edge as shown in the 2 examples above...
I think the person who originally made the 'sunsmile mix' entry was thinking about and intending to call the entry the "SunRise Mix"...
Yaguruma

notice the very particular shape of the leaf structure...

yaguruma looks like the plant I found online called rosita that looks almost exactly like it. Flower color pattern and leaf shape is the same. The only difference is that mine has split petals. http://www.swallowtailgardenseeds.com/vines/morningglory.html
Yaguruma is the original Japanese Romaji term to describe one of the red youjiro...
The western marketing name 'rosita' has been applied to at least 3 completely different plants and generally I dis-recommend using 'rosita' to describe any MG's in an effort to avoid perpetuating any confusion...
Split petals have been known to occur with some frequency on Sunsmile flowers but not as a matter of routine on Yaguruma...
Can we see some updated closeups of the fully open blooms that you are getting and some clear views of the leaf structure...(?)
Thanks (!)

I will be happy to take some with the next bloom. Unfortunately I was busy all day and did not get any further pics of the flower. It did remain mostly like the pic I posted only slightly more open. It stayed open all day and did not close until night. It looks like the new bloom will open today or tomorrow. I will post leaf pictures as well, they do look exactly like the "rosita" link with the fiddle shape and the two split top parts. ( sorry do not know the technical names for the leaf parts)
Lav, It's a beautiful bloom. How big is the bloom?
Jackie
I would say about five inches across as it is. I think it would be slightly larger if I had not planted them in a window box on the ground. I really think they needed a larger container.
lavener-louise,
Although the plant that you have there may be Yaguruma...I'd like to see if the leaves continue to develop as clearly depicted in the photo for Yaguruma as seen here
Yaguruma - please take particular note of the exact shape of the leaf lobing

P.S. - We need additional reference photos of the leaves in the PlantFiles for most of the Youjiro...
I will continue to follow up with more pictures when I take them. Do all JMG stay open all day?
The Japanese types will often close around noon but may stay open longer depending on sun intensity ,the particular strain / cultivar and a number of local conditions...
The Youjiro hybrids will often remain open longer than pure strain Ipomoea nil because of the Ipomoea purpurea content which will tend to allow the blooms to remain open longer...

Fascinating! I have yeltas planted there too and they close by 1pm. These two blooms have stayed open all day so far, not closing until night. Even in our 94 degree heat.
Lavender - I am sooo curious. You said the packet of seeds had a photo of the vines/blooms on it? If so, would you be so kind as to photograph the picture attached to the seed packet? I would really like to see it. Thanks!
I wish I could! My darling sweet husband "cleaned" my seed table for me while I was in Florida and I have not been able to find it since! I could hardly get mad at him when he was just trying to be sweet and clean up the mess I had left when I was going through my seeds for planting. It was a small pic no more than 2x3 maybe (looks like it had been printed off) and came in a one of those small seed ziplocks. It just had a pic of five different flowers. So I am just going off memory here. I did intend to keep the picture. If I do find it I will post it.
lavender-louise - Thanks for the additional clarifying photo here

I can see 7 white rays and a leaf shape that is very typical for the Fuji series, but NOT typical for Yaguruma...
My strong impression is that what you have is Fuji no Beni

Thanks so much for the help Ron. You were right about the plant file photos needing more leaf pictures.
Here is the bloom of the other JMG I have. Leaves very different. More rounded and not lobed and also variegated. The flower is very pretty purple and blue with white edges. This one has divided petals, but I cannot tell if that is it's habit yet or just a messy first flower. It is very large and pretty though! My first one in the post above did set some seed already.
The leaves surrounding this flower belong to star of yelta, not this vine.
Such beautiful colors and blooms. I am going to keep ordering some sunshine mix until I find a red one.
Also going to look for Youjiro seeds
Well, big decision, Onalee has about 5 different colors of Youjiro......
