It was perched on a tree outside my house last night. It is no longer there.
CLOSED: Any idea what this large 3 inch insect is?
This long-horned wood-boring beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is a prionid, which includes the largest cerambycids in North America. It appears to be Prionus laticollus, the broad-necked root borer. See http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/1352/ and http://www.forestpests.org/hickory/broadnecked.html for images and more information.
Ick. Thanks. Mine must be pregnant, based on the photos on that link.
