Good evening everyone!
This spring I moved my lilies from a bed along the garage to a new raised bed that my husband built for me. My lilies are now beginning to bloom, but I've noticed that some of the flower 'pods' (not sure if that's the correct term) appear to have been eaten away.
Thoughts and suggestions are most appriciated!

Pest Problem? Maybe?
Yeah, something looks like it was tasting it... Are they all like that?
Wow, I wish I knew. It looks like it really does a number on it. You should send it to the UW extension office. You might want to crack open that bud to see what is living in there. I'd be too curious not to.
All 6 or 7 of my lilies have some damage - maybe 1/4 of the flower buds but it seems to continue getting worse. I've noticed some ants around and a few small spider webs. Would spiders do such a thing?
Crack one open? Good idea! I'll do that first thing in the morning and see what I find... I'll be sure to post the results.
That's a good idea to contact the UW office... I hadn't thought of that.

I'd be interested in seeing what's inside if you crack one open. If there isn't a catapiller in there, could it maybe be grasshoppers?
Well I cracked one of the flower pods open and there was nothing inside that shouldn't be there. So, I took a few of the flower pods to Milaegers and they're going to pass it on to someone who may be of some help. In the meantime I bought some ortho bug spray. When I wnet out this morning I noticed that some of the open flowers are being eaten and the top leaves appear to have 'scratches' on them... if I find anthing out I'll be sure to pass it on!
Thanks!
Hmmm, I still wonder about grasshoppers......
Is there anything I should be looking for to determine if it's grasshoppers? I haven't come across any grasshoppers themselves, although I know they're around.
Thanks!
Christy
I know that can be destructive little guys. Do you have Japanese Beetles? I'm taking wild shots here...
I don't know much about these, but here's some info on red lily beetles. http://www.gardeners.com/Controlling%20Lily%20Beetles/8090,default,pg.html
I don't think the Red Lily Beetle is this far West yet. At least I sure hope it isn't...
Concerning the 'scratched' appearence ~ have you looked into thrips?
Nope, no lily beetle here yet. safe there. We have all sorts of other lively annoyances, don't worry.
What are Thrips, O-Moby-Wan-Kenoby?
Not that it's necessarily the problem in this case, but here's some info http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7429.html
This is a daylily with thrip damage
