Texas Hosta Society? Dallas Hosta Society?

North Richland Hills, TX(Zone 8a)

Ah, I see Sylvia. Well, I'll definitely let you know as it gets closer whether I think I'll be able to attend or not. I may talk my mom into coming with me too! :)

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Hmmm... what is an ad hoc committee supposed to do? How many people are we talking about?

(Annie ) in Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

Snow, that is an awesome idea about pecan shell mulch. I have not seen it at any of the nurseries here in Austin. I take it Northhaven and Calloways up in Dallas carry it? My husband travels back and forth to Dallas every week. Maybe I could talk him into bring back a few bags every week.....

hmmmmn....pecan shell mulch...wonder if they have some up here...should this fall anyway...thanks for the heads up...

It seems like that would be easy to come by in any area that grows alot of pecans. There are a couple of pecan shelling businesses here. I'll try to remember to ask about collecting the shells.

Patti, I am so glad you asked so everyone will know what we need to do. An Ad Hock committee is formed for a specific purpose or end presently under consideration.
The first thing on the agenda would be to select officers.
At this point the selected officials will take over and its out of my hands! LOL I know exactly who I am going to nominate ... and I hope you guys are thinking about that too.
We will need to desiginate a location so we convene immediately after after the presentation ... while we have everyone here ... because some people will traveling a long distance to get here.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and new to gardening in TX. I'm interested in Hostas and Hellebores and have purchased a bunch of each for my yard. I just hope I can find suitable places for them!

I'm planning to attend the Hosta presentation at NHG, so count me in, and if it seems best to put another plant with hostas to form a club, I vote for hellebores or heucheras (I have some of these too, but I think they're getting too much sun!)

Nice to meet you, Sarah!

Sylvia, did you include rosethyme on your blast? She lives in Denton and posts a lot on the hosta forum.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

I'been lurking here because I have an interest in hostas, but very little experience. But I wouldn't suggest adding hecheras to the bill. Judgeing from what I've read and from the trials I've had in my own yard I would say that hecheras as wonderful as they are, are not very happy in Texas. It's too hot in the daytime even in shade, but it's also too hot at night. The plants just don't have time to cool off. I have only 2 Bressinghams and they are barely hanging on. I would vote for hellebores.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Mary Lee, I've had the same experience. I've lost about a dozen over the last couple of years. The latest casualties were planted in spring 2007. They were very pretty with their fall colors, and we've enjoyed them all this year. Then mid-July hit, and overnight they just shriveled. I've heard that the villosas do better down here, but the only one I've actually seen is Sylvia's sp., which is gorgeous.

I love my hellebores. Nothing phases them.

Fredericksburg, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, including hellebores makes a lot more sense to me. Even though I don't have any. That's next on my list of addictions.:) I'm hoping for a hellebore coop or something.

Dallas, TX

Hi Sarah
Welcome to the group ... its good to hear from another Hosta lover. Patti are you back in town.?Yes I do have Rose thyme on the list ... we were mailing back and forth for a while, but I haven't heard from her lately.
Patti since you are so creative I want you help me with the name tags. I will handle the cost. Email me or I will email you.
Speaking of heucheras, mine are still out there, they even bloomed. But the Villosa is huge. I don't know where the picture is, but check out the size of the leaf on the right in this picture,. its huge. I want to separate them, but I am fearful of what might happen. Yes Hellebores do well here, except Foetidus.

... and NO I don't know th name of that Hosta ... I have been trying to find out for a year. :)

Sylvia....
My DH went through his back surgery fine and is doing great.

Today (7-12) is Christy's surgery date, please send a prayer up for her. She is having several proceedures done at one time. I claim great news on her ordeal and that she will be up and around in no time.

Hi Hosta Lovers and hopeful Society members. I got a email from Mike Chambers last night, asking if we wanted
him to speak on setting up the Texas Hosta Society. I gratefully told him yes. With this in mind I would like all of you to think seriously about nominations for officers. You can also nominate yourself once you decide in which capacity you would like to serve.
Patti and I are in the process of setting up an agenda. The meeting will follow immediately after Mike's presentation. If you guys have any questions or suggestions, I am wide open at this point.
Please contact me at thesissinghurst@sbcglobal.net
Thanks

I'm sorry, I have family coming out to stay this weekend and won't be able to make it to NHG. Will someone take notes to share with those of us that can't make it....pretty please.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It isn't in the cards for me either.

Dallas, TX

I am sorry to say but you guys missed a most informational meeting. And No I did not take very many notes. But the one thing he did talk strongly on is when to MULCH. I dont mulch ... simply because Hostas need 32 degrees to survive in the ground and we dont get that BELOW ZERO weather. So I did not think it was necesary ... but it is necesary to keep down weeds. Also Mike says the perfect time to mulch is when the pips start showing up in the ground, so you know where the plants are. You place mulch around the pips and be sure not to put it on top of the crown because it can cause Southern blight. He talked about heaving ... plants dont heave in the south and he explained why. I was really awed with this because Mary Chaisten told me told me to mulch my pots ... luckly I didnt like what they were doing and took it out of my pots. I know our northern counter parts talk about heaving but it dont happen here. Oh Mike had excellent information and so much of it. He showed slides of his beautiful gardens in Memphis, that was a treat in itself... as he showed Hostas that do good in the south. It was so good to hear someone of knowledge talk of gardening with Hostas in the south. He also said ... and I thought was funny .. that if you love a Hosta enough that wont do well in the south ... grow it as annual! I would love to have Mike come back for another presentation ... but that will be when we get a society going so we can raise funds to bear the expense ... as you know this presentation was sponsered by Sissinghurst. Luckily there were five local ladies present who is very interested in a Society. I intend to go foreward with them to get this started since I already put my foot in it! LOL But I still would like for you guys to get involved. It can be a lot of fun raising funds and buying stuff at cost like Osmocote at 1.46 a pound, dividing hosta for fun raising and sales. Going around from store to store identifying HVX to the store owners. And we Texans can come up with our own agenda .. so I am open for suggestions as how we can get together. I was thinking ... maybe we can make this first meeting a part of the N. Texas Roundup ... we only need about 45 minutes. And I can invite the other five ladies to the roundup ... what you think about that? ... then we can tell you more about Mike's presentation. ;)
