Pet Names

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I thought this was kind of neat. Anyone struggling with the naming of a new pet will enjoy this - http://ivillage.com/pets/petnames/

Our cats kinda named themselves, and Sarah the dog already had her name when we got her. But now I have many, many names to browse through should we add a second dog to the brood... (hint, hint, gardenhubby) :o)

Ah, pet naming! We've always had a hard time with this. Our cats ended up being Thelma and Louise. I've always wanted to reenact the final seen from the movie with them--you know, put them in a little kitty convertible and give them sunglasses. No driving over a cliff, though.

GW... Funny about pet names, and how we come by them. My older cat is named after a character in a book I was reading, and the next cat was named for a friend who died just before we got the cat.

My dog's name (a dachshund) is funny story... When a close friend got a dachshund a few years earlier that I got mine, she had a long list of names planned. I went with her to pick up the puppy, and upon leaving, she started again on the litany of names.

I told her the dog looked like a bank. "Remember the plaster banks covered with fuzz and shaped like a dog that you could win at the Fair? " Well, the dog DID look like those sad faced banks, so she named her dog Riggs, after Riggs National Bank in Washington, DC.

I had forgotten the story until I started thinking of names for my dachshund puppy.... then I noticed she looked like those dog banks. So, my dog is Morgan (Guarranty and Trust)... had she been a male, I'd have chosen Fargo...

Names should always be fun!

We at one time had two black cats, we got one from spca, and one from under a crumpled house. We called them TOM and ALI cat. TOM is still with us and we found the same day ali was killed, on our property a dropped kitten by barn cat mom down aways from us she is wild but we seem to have tamed her, we called her Shirley, cause we shirley don,t know where she came from.

Our black lab is Roscoe Peter. The Peter is for Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Eater because one Thanksgiving while we were all in the family room trying to digest dinner before dessert, Roscoe put his front paws on countertop and got into the pumpkin pie in the kitchen. Our other dog, is Woodstock. The cats are Oreo (black and white), Misty (all black) and Fred.

My German Shepherd is Hosannah. It wasn't so neat when she got out of the yard and took off, and here I am running down the street, shouting Hosannah! My daughter said I was lucky a police car didn't come down the street because they would have probably hauled me away!

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

A Rotwieller we had was named Felony and she had a litter of little Misdemeanors, Sheriff, Deputy, Marshal, Capone, and Peanut butter and Jelly The last two named by my then 3 year old granddaughter. A Cat named Mr. Peabody...So many over the years!

Brownville, NY(Zone 4a)

I like this thread! It's nice to see all the creative names.
I love Felony and her pups - and the "bank" dashies!!

I had two cocker spaniel brothers years ago named Jake and Elwood (the Blues Brothers). And Diggah, a black cocker who loved to dig (I figured that was a female version of Digger)

Our sled dogs are Gannon and Oakland(SO is a Raiders fan) Caz is short for Casper, our white cat (not very original I know). We also have Elvis, an albino Oscar; and a wonderful tabby cat named B*tch (she was named by an Ex, and she won't answer to anything else but that name)

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Kiki was named by the no kill shelter from which we got her (thus the screen name natch). Bob is named for the lack of a tail which some of the local idiots cut off on halloween nite several years ago. He was apparently abandoned and went feral. we fed him outside for 6 years before finally deciding to trap him in the house because he had become obviously ill. Right now he is curled up in a chair next to me waiting to begin the days activities. They are both cats I suppose but we love them like children!

Wow,
Where do I begin. Right now I've got Willow who is an Afghan. She was named when I got her. My German Shepherd's name is Sarah, my son named her. Basil was my Afghan before Willow, named after the John Cleese character on Fawlty Towers (big and awkward, and very funny). The cats are Kittkin named by my son when he was two, Nigel, Agnes, Odette and Tarquinne, the last two are sisters. In the past we've had Hannah, Carrie, Xipe (pronounced shippy), Snowy (no, she wasn't white), Gypsy Moth (she ate everything in sight), Lindy, Poe, Jaws, Lucy, and Sambo. All were Afghans except Hannah, she was a Shepherd.

Until last year, we had two Siberian Huskies. Their names are/were Citron Absolute and Peppar Absolute on their AKC papers. They were named for my my beverage of choice-Absolut Vodka. LOL We always wanted to get a third and name it Currant Absolute after the newest intro from Absolute. What can I say? I WAS a bartender and a patron. Last year Citron had serious medical complications and became terminaly ill, so we euthanized her. Instead of buying another pricey pure bred, we went to a puppy rescue and got a pure black cocker spaniel/black lab mix. The kids picked her out and absolutely love her. Her name is Nina, which is the Spanish word for girl. Let's face it, all the words for black are extremely used up on pets. LOL She looks like a miniature black lab and is great with the kids. When I was little, we had a Schnauzer name Ronzelig and I don't remember what it meant, but know it was German. And we also had a black French Poodle named Deirerre(sp?)-the French word for butt. We found her abandoned or lost in the middle of a storm and all we could see was a backside sticking out from under some steps. LOL

My dog is called "Colby" she is a rescue dog so had the name when i got her, probebly named after that [deleted] spin off tv show you sent to us, shes about that age.

High Springs, FL(Zone 8b)

Soon after I was first married, my husband and I acquired a cat that we named Kittyhead. Shortly after, there was a tiny little stray mutt named Burp. Later, there was another dog we named Bump and after he died from Parvo there was a black lab mix puppy we called Knob. Also, Kittyhead's daughter, Babyhead, eventually gave birth to Egg and Frog.

When I became pregnant with my daughter, our relatives were very nervously asking "What are you going to name the baby?"

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

As long as everyone is into the pet names I'm posting a picture of the kitten who found us (he was abandoned at the end of a dirt road.)The funny thing about him is he's missing most of one of his ears-kinda.It's weird, the ear looks perfectly formed ,but its less than 1/2 the size of the other one. He's a orange tiger .So far we call it "The Kitten"but we need a real name. My other cat ,whos name is "Magnum" not for the PI ,but for Champagne(SP?)He's a orange ,big cat with 7 toes on all 4 feet!!All my other cats have been named for beers.Any suggestions??

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

When we got our Border Collie pup my other half wanted to call her Mischief. That name, although now so appropriate since she chewed the stuffing out of a section of my couch, didn't seem right. While surfing the net I read herding dogs used to be named after natural occurrences so we settled on Misty Morning.

Topeka, KS(Zone 5b)

Great thread. Our calico is Mustang Sally.
The name used to fit her perfectly. Now she's old, fat and lazy and people ask "why?"

southeast, NE

We have a border collie named Abby and the rest of our "pets" are dd's cows that she showed and raised as 4-H and FFA projects. They are - Nelda, Maggie, Daisy, Lily, Angel, Reba, Dolly, Molly, Missy, Jazz, and Sadie. We have 3 heifer calves that she is taming down - they are Nike, Rose and Orphan Annie (Annie mom died earlier this year). We also have three pet steers that she showed but soon will not longer be here - they are Boxcar Willey, Scooby and John Boy.

Not sure how dd came up with any of those cow names - they just seem to fit. Daisy is Lily's mom and Rose's grandmother so dd is starting a flower trend.

Guess our family has a "funny bone" as we
give ours silly names too' We had two tuxedo
kittens,we named Puss&Boots(used to be a
cat food named that' Our AKC German Shepherd,
Ginger,gave birth to Geranimo,Duke,Sissy,
Booger and Running Bear' Lol' Sure was fun
at suppertime. Oh,our Siamese Manx was Tootsie,
but also nicknamed,Boo' He liked to suprise
us when we lest expected it,Lol'He was 22yr. and
now in heaven'All lived long,rich lives,Bear
left us last week(17)so it's now Sissy and me''
Thanks for this thread,it's a joy to read and
share memories'See ya,Sis'

And for that international effect there was the pup we found that we thought was German shepherd but turned out to be a Norweigian Elkhound so we named him Pedro after a Mexican friend.

Durham, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

we have a black cat called squeaky - she can't maiow properly.. she's fat and fuzzy and really cute, like a little mouse, so the name stuck. we caled her 'squeaker' sometimes too.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I forgot to add a little doggie, one of my mother's former employees had. It was a little mutt they found in a dumpster behind a Ponderosa Steak House. They named it T-bone. :)

What a happy ending to a sad story''

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Let's see... where to start. We have Tigger, Simba and Ginger the cats, Wally and Mollie the dogs, Elliot the cockatoo, Chi-Chi and Dove the chinchillas and a parakeet, turtle and snake without names. ( I think I live at the zoo) For a while I raised show rabbits and they were all named after composers and musical stuff.

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

We have two tortoise shell cats, sisters that were abandoned in a co-worker's mailbox.

One is long haired and the other is short haired. The long haired one is chunky and ornery, her name is Rosebuddy and The Mercy Cat is her slender, sleek, short-haired sister (with one orange paw, the rest black)...

They started out as "Goodness" and "Mercy" because they followed me... (think back to Sunday School songs... surely goodness and mercy shall follow me, all the days, all the days of my life...)

but Goodness...wasn't good.

Then we tried Mercy and Grace... but again, Grace.. wasn't.

So one day I was holding the unnamed one in my arms and talking to her (Sappy visual I know) and said, you're so cute you're like a little rose bud... you're my buddy...

and she perked up! So I named her Rosebuddy, or more formally, "The Rosebud Kitty".

The Mercy Cat just went right along with the formality of Rosebuddy's official name.

We sing a song to them we made up to the tune of "It's the Holiday Season" and they come from wherever they are in the house to listen ... they're a hoot. I love them dearly and miss them when we are gone.

This was a really cute thread!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

I forgot to mention the cats' names. We have an old fuddy-duddy named Elliott and a young upstart just under 2 named Hattie.

Elliott just seemed like an Elliott, and eventually all sorts of affectionate pseudonymns spawned from that. You pet owners can relate, I KNOW you can...

Elliott Jellybone Sausageman (he gets limp and maleable when relaxed...and you could hold him up between outstretched hands like a string of sausages). Elliott Smelly-butt...self-explanatory for a smelly cat.

Hattie's just mostly Hattie or Hattie-cat. Sometimes Skitter.

Sarah is Sarah-bera, Sarah-bellum (who has a Sarah-bellyum), and Puppytoes/Pupitos.

** DH Gardenhubby just reminded me that Sarah is also Puppalupagis (like Snuffilupagis from Sesame Street). **

We have a cat named Chickenhead and another named Bodacious. We also have a dog named petey. One of my favorite animal names is my friends name for her cat "Fatty McButterPants". Chickenhead was so named because I have a friend who affectionately calls anyone she likes "you little chickenhead" and it stuck. It is pretty funny when you take him to the vet and they call out his name...everyone looks a me like "how could you"..lolol!

Perrysburg, OH(Zone 5a)

I temporalily adopted three homeless sister kittens, who I named after one of my favorite things, Lily, Violet, and Daisy, they now have happy homes and all love digging up the flowers beds. As for the permanent spoiled, lazy, fat, cuddley-wuddley monsters as I call them, one is extremely feminine and is simply call Girlie, her sister who has bright green/turquoise eyes with a blue circle in the center of them is called Blue. My girls or "the girls" as their known as are manx sister and could almost pass for twins, sometimes I call one by the others name by mistake when I don't have my glasses on and boy, they really give me the evil eye, cats seem to be really sensitive about their names, anyone else ever notice this???

This is sssoooo much fun, love it''''

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Had a cat named Josey that had a weight problem. Heard my grandaughter say Gee Joses Fat so often we started callin the cat Jehosiphat.

New Paris, OH

Zanymuse i also had a felony, a russian grey who was given to me after she had had 5 misdemeaners (these cats were all owned by a crime reporter for a local paper). Felony was a great cat because she would play fetch but sadly was killed by a young fast driver.

Currently i have Arlo the dog (not named for Arlo Guthrie) who is a rott/golden retrever mix. Navin a white anf ginger cat who is named for the Steve Martin character Navin R Johnsnon because he is a jerk (he was born an old curmudgeon-I have had him since I found him in an alley at 5 weeks, he couldn't ebven poop on his own he was so young). Than there is our huge white kitty Shiva (named for the Hindu God) who we found at a birthday party and braved a huge rottwieler to get chickn wing snacks we revelers were giving him and than hopped in our car and has been with us ever since. Finally we have Stimpy (you eediot) a tortiseshell and white cat who is our happy happy joy joy kitty. All are great ratters and mousers despite being neutered males.

We also have a rooster named Mr Kazudy, one named Otis, one named Igor (he had a stroke as a youngin' and walks crooked) and our newest is named General Eisenhower so we can call him either Ike or The General. In a few years he may become Mr President but we didn't think he was up to the responisbilities of the office yet and I suppose we would have to have a poultry election. I dunno how the hens would go for voting.

This Is A Great Thread!

The cat, that I'm now allergic to, is named Schwartz! My family backround is German, the cat is black, the German word for black is...Schwartz! She's frequently referred to as Schwartzter, and my favorite...General Schwartzkopf. The latter she gets from her habit of hiding out in the bathtub. She pokes her head out of her "foxhole"!

My 15 yr old Flat Coated Retriever, Samantha, goes by the nickname Woogs. Huh?? Follow me here: Dog...Doog...Doogs...Woogs! We've had her since she was a 6mo old stray, we're only keeping her until we can find a good home for her ;)

Lastly, 2 1/2 yr old Rags. She was "dumped" out here in the country 1 1/2 years ago and finally found her way into our yard. Somebody Really screwed up. She's the Best behaved, smartest dog ever! She's been crowned Ragamuffin!

I love hearing about your pets "pet" names!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

We have many pets, so here's their story:

Bummy: This is my 18 pound baby that sleeps on the pillow with me with his paw in my hand. He came to us when the neighbors moved away. They tried to take him, but he wouldn't stay. One day I was working in the garden and there he was. I said something like "Did your family move away? What a bummer, huh?" Anyway, then his name was Bummer, but has long since been shortened to Bummy.

Porky: He came to us as an orphaned kitten that we fed with an eyedropper. He ate like a pig, so we started calling him Porky.

Bug: This cat was brought home from the livestock sales ring by one of my kids. When she was a little girl, her dad called her bug, so she named the cat that.

Weevil and Cricket: Two kittens that Bug had before we had a chance to get her fixed. They needed bug names.

Butch: A rather large rabbit. Don't know where his name came from. He was named already when I discovered we had him. Actually, we had him for quite awhile before I happened to find him one day outside, cage and all. The kids didn't want to tell me they had him because they were afraid I'd get mad.

Fun thread.

Del Rio, TX

Great thread, I love hearing all the wonderful stories about pet's and how we choose their names.

We also have many pets and this is the story of how they got their names.

Lets see the oldest would be "Sterling" a silver toy poodle. My DS gave him to me 14 years ago for my birthday and I named him Sterling because of his silver color.

Next came "Bear" a mixed Red Heeler. Someone droped him off one night 12 years ago on our front porch. He was so sick and the Vet didn't think he would make it but he recovered and ate like a bear and he is a red brown so we named him Bear.

Third dog to come to us is "Bo" a black lab, he showed up 11 years ago chasing butterflies and we couldn't find his owners. Course we realized after the puppy stage and his need to chew everything in site they probably dropped him off here. He was named Bo after Bo Jackson(NFL running back) because he loved to run for a ball, bust through the other two dogs and keep it all for himself. He still doesn't like to share his ball.

Last dog but not least is Jake the baby, he'll be 1 year old next month. We got him from my DDIL's brother. His poodle got out and guess what we have the cutest little white dog, he looks just like the dog on the Mighty Dog commercials. We let our Grandson name him and he chose Jake because he loves John Wayne movies and Big Jake is his favorite.

Now our cats, first is Tiger and Sammy litter mates from a dear friend. They are 5 years old, Tiger is a long hair yellow tabby and Sammy is cream colored also long hair. We thought they were both toms but it turned out Sammy was a girl. Tiger is named after a tom we had when the children were growing up and Sammy was named for the friend who gave them to us Sam, but we change it to Sammy when the Vet told us he was a girl.lol

Next is Sherman a short hair yellow striped tom who showed up 2 years ago out front and decided to stay with us. My Son named him after the American tank the Sherman because he is built like one and also eats like one. Huge kitty but very gentle natured.

And last kitty is Panzer, he's the baby. DH bought him home from the railroad depot last November. This sweetie was so little he couldn't eat yet so we had to bottle feed him. He is a grey striped short hair and growing like weeds now. Since we have a Tiger, which is also the name of a tank and Sherman the tank, DH named him Panzer for the German tank so he wouldn't feel left out. All the boys get along just great no war between the tanks but they like to pick on Miss Sammy but she pretty much holds her own.

All of our pets are fixed, you know sometimes, especially at shot time I wonder if maybe it's my Vet who leaves the pets here for us to find. Gosh I better send him a thank you card, lol. Just kidding, we love each and every one of them and if tomorrow brings another orphan to us, I'll just go leave it at the Vets house.

4 dogs + 4 cats = A whole lot of love and enough fur to make a one of a kind coat of many colors!

God Bless All Our Pets!
T-Lily 8-)
