Wonderful pics Dave!

Lovely as usual. I did not know that they would eat berries!

Actually, Marna, they survive on berries in the winter when insects are not available. Holly berries, dogwood berries and even buds if times get really bad. In our area berries are scarce in winter so they really appreciate the meal worms then.

You know dave, I was going to write that it was strange to see them eat the berries this time of year, 'cuz I thought I remembered you saying they ate berries in the winter.

anyway, glad they do, makes for a gorgeous pix.

Oooo we have those poke berry things around here...I will have to pay attention!

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7a)

oh my yes...they love berries...last spring the 1st fledges at my house were weaned to cherry berries from MW's, and I noticed my male went thru a spell that he would love to carry off small pieces of apple during the week of "boot camp" for the new fledges....I assume he was feeding the apples to them along with the MW's......
Lately i have noticed a strange thing....a wasp / More than once has spent a good bit of time stinging and "fiddling" around with a couple of mealworms....anybody else out there ever noticed such a thing...and why would they do that...it sure does bother the BBs who are trying to get a MW for supper

The adults are well into their moult. You can almost see the difference, day after day.

I was going through my BB pics from Feb.-Apr. and had forgotten how much more blue-gray they are when they first show up.

Yes, Nanny, they look their best when it's time to go courtin'.

Here is a shot of one of the fledglings, in flight. It's so hot he even has his mouth open when he flies.
