Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i have been useing capillary matting for some time also. i use it for all my babies.it has always worked wonderful.gail, you say you are useing chantix? thats what i used also. you pick a quit date & it does not have to be in 1 week, that is up to you, butttt you must pick a quit date.mine was in 2 weeks from the time i started taking chantix, give it a try, it really works. i had smoked for 50 years,if i can do it so can you, if you really want to quit. i'll say a prayer for you, lol.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Bonnie, you are so sweet. At this time I am just thinking that I have to quit smoking for a few days after my dental implants and teeth pulled. He said the implants wouldn't heal properly if I smoked. I am hoping that this stuff works so well that I will want to give up smoking permanently. I can not afford this dental work to begin with but I certainly can get motivated with not losing the money I have spent on the implants.

Kim had told me once that it makes your brain change so that smoking has the nastiest taste in the world. Thanks for those instructions. I think I have a months worth of the medicine but my directions said use only 1 week before quitting.......I need to go back and reread the instructions and also see how much medicine I have(LOL)

Hi,
I could not use chantix as I tried it twice and both times it gave me very bad mood swings and then I had terrible dreams while taking it... The dreaming was the worst part for me... My second time also told me Gail to stop in one week.. the first did not say that... Oh well I hope it works really well for you.. I quit for 17 years and I picked it up when stress got out of hand and have been smoking now for about 6 - 7 months and I have to stop again... I don't have the will power but I am going to have to find it...
hugs,
Sue

Susan , you have a dmail

I don't want to sound pessimistic nor make anyone upset.

My husband smoked for most of his life and found impossible to quit....

....until he found out, in March, that his younger brother was suffering from mouth cancer stage 4 (possibly) caused by smoking.

Mark hasn't touched a cigarette since.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

It is hard for me to get motivated at age 66 when everyone I know who has lung cancer (and I have some real good friends who have died from lung cancer and have two friends right now with stage 4 lung cancer) has never smoked.

I am not suffering under the delusion that I won't have serious health problems eventually...

Sorry about your brother in law

The drug company that makes Chantix needs to be sued for the side effects, including suicide reported.........very mood changing drug and they didn't even do the right research for the majority of the public who DO SMOKE. Their clinical trials were very controlled with people who had never been depressed, etc..............they made sure of that. Now they are getting law suits over it. I am not taking it for sure.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

My brother will be dead a year this Sunday from lung cancer.. I did not smoke when he died but then after that allot went on one was almost loosing my DIL after she gave birth to her daughter and just other things but when my dog Rosa almost died that was the straw that broke the camels back...I will stop again this I know just not today but will in the very near future... This medicine was awful for me.. Now I can be moody but most of the times I know why but with this stuff I could be fine one min. and the next jack the ripper... No thanks...
Hugs,
Susan

I think the way smoking affects one person depends on their genes as well. Some peeps smoke a lot, their whole lifes and never have a problem. Some die from lung problems and have never smoked.

Some people are more prone to illnesses than others.

Has anyone tried the nicotine patches? and the chewing gum?

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

The gum worked for my son. It burned my mouth. I have also tried the nicotine patches but I never stopped smoking (LOL).

I do think that genes play the biggest role in health problems. We don't have cancer in our family but strokes and heart attacks are how everyone has died in my family. That is true for my big extended family, also.

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

I did not try patches but I did the gum years ago and it burnt my tongue so bad I could not use it... I agree about the genes playing a factor in our lives.. My family die young and I am hoping to change that and live many more years... One way or another...

... and some die supposedly from years of being subjected to second hand smoke. Death is just a fact of life. We are all going to die some day, and I don't think we have a lot of control over it. There are probably some smokers who have died at a young age, but I've known some smokers who have lived very long lives. I truly believe the air we breathe has carcinogens that affect us! So much stuff has come out over the years. We just had our swimming pool refinished. The pool built in 1978 and apparently the stuff they used back then had asbestos in it. The pool guy told us it probably wouldn't be good for us to be outside while they were grinding the inside of the pool because of the dust flying around! Our house was built in 1973 so there is probably asbestos in these walls too.

So, yes we know that nicotine and all the carcinogens in tobacco causes cancer but so do a lot of other things. I know we can't control the air we breathe and we can make the choice to quit smoking ... but people should just live and let live. I don't like cigarettes and can't be around the smoke because of my allergies but I think everyone has a right to smoke if they enjoy it. Nicotine is addictive yes, but so are a lot of other things, much worse things.

My dad is 83 and has been a heavy smoker since the age of 14! He has been pretty healthy his whole life. He has had two total knee replacements (the most recent just last year). He has tried to quit smoking a few times ... a couple of months ago most recently. He tried quitting cold turkey and ended up having problems. My sister and I both told him it probably wasn't good to try to quit like that ... his body NEEDS the nicotine after so many years of smoking, and his body let him know it too! He is back to smoking and I'm sure will have a cigarette his last day on this earth. His health is slowly deteriorating (had prostate cancer surgery earlier this year) but for the most part, he is healthy, has never had to take heart or blood pressure medication like most his age.

I agree with Gail, I think genes play a major role in life expectancy. I keep telling my husband he will probably out live me by many years. His mom lived to 97, his grandparents on both sides lived into their mid 90's. My family on the other hand ... life is shorter. One of my grandparents died in their 60's another lived to be 93. My mom lived to be almost 79. It's the maternal side of my family that have died younger. The cancer gene is in my family on both sides.

We are all on this planet together and just have to decide what we feel is right for ourselves and not judge others for having different views than what ours may be.

Things we have in common and our differences makes us "family".

Ok, here I go rambling again. Sorry. I just hope y'all know that I keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers every day, smokers and non smokers alike! I have met so many interesting, funny, generous, caring and compassionate people here in this garden. I can't imagine a day without my DG fix!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love you, LIn!!!!!!!!!!! It is so true that our differences make up all our joys in life.....I certainly wouldn't want to have everyone like myself for sure!

I do try to be respectful about smoking around others. When the kids came down July 4th, no one smoked in the house because there were 2 non smokers in the crowd............

(Zone 1)

This would be one very boring world if we were all identical ... twilight zone! I know the world would not want two of me! LOL. I try to be good most of the time but I do have days where I am a witch with a capital B ... if you get my drift!

Differences make a rainbow of joy! We all learn from each other.

Lin I wish I had your way with words!! That was so well said ....

I have a question about the capillary matting etc .... How often is bleach or whatever needed to keep the algae down or will just scrubbing the trays and washing the matting used on a regular basis be enough?

I have chemical sensitivities and have to be very careful with them and that includes bleach ..... I know my babies would grow faster with steady watering like this but I don't know if I could handle all that would go with it....

Thanks for any tips!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda, it is real easy and less work to do it this way. If you don't want to use clorox on them in the kitchen sink (it takes about 3 or 4 months to get nasty looking) throw them in the washing machine with white cup towels or bath towels with a little bleach. Don't use too much soap as you may need to double rinse in the machine.

If you are sensitive to Clorox, I often use CLR in a spray bottle that cuts all the white lime build up in my trays......then rinse your trays in vinegar and water........that is enough to clean them......
You can also use Physan to clean trays. I only clean my Permanest trays about every 4 months.......if you do it on a continuous basis, you don't have to do it all at once. That is what I do.............(just look for the nastiest ones)

I got my capillary matting from Cape Cod Violetry but that is not necessary. For two years I used a cheap acrylic blanket from Walmart and cut it up, but I think felt from a fabric shop would work better.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

Ohh, I like the vinegar and water part, I should have thought of that, duh, I know what to use and how to stay away from chemicals in my regular house cleaning etc so I'll just apply those same principals to the trays and mats.

Now to get set up in order to give this a try, most of my strep leaves are just starting to show ears so I have a little time ..... I feel some online shopping is in order! LOL

Thanks, Brenda

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Brenda.........Cape Cod is wonderful and the permanest trays may be only 50 cents more than Park..........you have to email them to send you a PDF catalog.............but if you wish, I can send you the one I saved but you would have to give me an email address of some kind. Just make up one on gmail or yahoo, etc.................

Hey All;
I agree with plantlady, we are all different & it should be that way. if gail does not want to quit smoking that is her choice.my hubby still smokes in my home & it does not bother me at all. just because i quit does, ent mean the whole world has to quit.i have alot of friends that still smoke & would like to quit & maybe some day the time will be right for them.
