Kathy_Ann,
Like I said .... if the egg was a guinea egg ... the chick is a hybrid. They are unusual. It can lay eggs if it is a hen. I'd cull it if it were mine. FYI .... Not all mules are sterile .. to be accurate ..... 90%+ of them are sterile but there have been MANY documented cases of fertile mules. Kelly in Moxee
Look what hatched from a guinea egg!
oh ok then i didnt know thanks
Hi josh. Here is a link that is a little technical, but does discuss the concept of interspecific hybridization and fertility as it relates to speciation (the creation of distinct species). If you wade through the jargon there are some nice examples and pictures of interspecific hybrids and reasons for the sterility of many interspecific hybrids.

cool thanks catscan i am pretty intrested in hybrids and cloning and stuff lik that so i will have a look
Make sure you go through the all the slides at the end--some of the best pictures are there! :0) And it does list the guinea/chicken hybrid!
it was cool there were some pretty weird things that were crossed in that list wasnt there
I particularly liked the "Wolphin" and it is fertile!
i know i just looked it up on wikipedia apparently it had 3 babys only one is still alive
Lol prodigy Catscan : )
:0)
hey, willing to bet Kathy's guin IS a prodigy!!!
such a cute one tho.
Well, The store wasn't opened, which concerns me, the phone has been disconnected and I went by there the other day and they weren't open, I think something bad has happened. to Him maybe her not sure, he's older man, I'm a litttle worried, they were such nice folks. Hope it'snothing serious, but I can't find out anything abou tthis little chicken unless they open back up. maybe a death in the family but the phone being disconnected bothers me. It was a nice place to get chickens, geese, ducks guineas and eggs and feed, plants, seeds, you name it. family owned. and run. Sorry I couldn't find out anything on the chicken
maybe they jsut went out of business, like many feed stores... so sad...
yes, we did hav eone other one go out of business also. but gosh they didn't sell out of everything like the other feedstore did. they had it completely stocked 2 weeks ago when I was in there. but the economy is getting so bad, I do't know how they stayed up and going anyways, they didn't have a good feed business, they were high dollar. on their feed.
Could you get ahold of them at their house. Is it close by there. I know my mom and pop feed store their house is right next door.
not this one, their name is also different than the name of the store, it's wilson's feedstore, and that isn't his first or last name LOL
I don't know their names at all.
Hmmmmmmm I dont know what to tell ya. I was, as like alot of others, hoping to find out what that little guy or gal was. I guess now we are going to have to wait a few months to find out. Keep us informed.
should be interesting, maybe you could post a new pic every week?
tf
We can all watch that baby grow. Lord knows your gonna see all mine grow.
I will post updated photos, I'm also going to continue to drive by that place when I go to town, weird , Dh doesn't think they went out of business, cause the store is still fully stocked. not sure why the phone is disconnected, could be just something wrong with it.
I thought it strange the other day when I drove by at l0:00 and they weren't open. will keep trying though
Maybe post a note on the door with some way of getting ahold of you, yea I know that would give anyone else your contact info also. Just a thought. Any thing else around them that maybe you could walk up to and ask?
Reason Im saying this, I live in a rather large town but I do most of my business in a small town and every body knows everybody, you know the saying someone sneezes and the whole town says bless you. Maybe someone might know something. Or just a vacation.

they know me by name and face, I've already though t abou t leaving a note on the door too next time I go there.
the bottom pic is a pearl guinea keet. the top looks to me like it is a guinea cross welsummer which is called a crossbreed. if it lives it is a female because male guinea cross don't live ver a few weeks old. if u look on feathersite.com u can see pics of such crosses and there should be a little info on them. the chicken breed would be different but same concept. i just hatched out pearl, pieds and lavanders, they r so adorable!!!
OH wow!, I sure hope it lives, would be so dissapointing if it didn't. Thanks for the help silkiechick.
What's a keet? this is my first time with guineas, the guy did tell me they were pearl. that would be the grey with white specks all over right? i'll have to go check out that site. I've never seen these babies run so fast, seems to be twice as fast as chicken babies.
I geuss keets ar e babies? another name for them?
keet is a baby guinea and havent seen u for a while silkiechick welcome back
josh
i'm always here everyday even if i don't post or have time to read alot, lol. i have just been swamped with stuff and since all 5 kid's r now home for summer.
ur very welcome kathy and yes that is what color it will be. i don't raise them but i have hatched them out for many people the last few years. the ones i just did r for my granny but she now only wants a couple, eekk i have 8 and more eggs in!! i must say the little lavanders have really caught my eye. i'll have to take pics tomarrow so u can see the 2 colors i have different than urs. i may talk dh into letting me keep a few, lol.
if it is a crossbreed yes it will be sterile and as it grows it should show more cariteristics(sp,lol) of the guinea. it's a cute little bugger that's for sure!!
not all ways are they sterile i thought they were to but som one said earlier that not all hybrids are and i looked it up and there have been a few documented cases of fertility

The Iowa Blue chicken breed is reputed to be a result of a ring neck pheasant and Barred Rock cross. The progeny were originally close to 75% sterile. But the continued offspring increased in fertility resulting in a new breed. The Iowa Blue breed is repuuted to sound quite a lot like a pheasant. Crossbreeds are usually sterile.
hmmmm, there was osmeone on here a while back that was in Iowa and had many breeds, including the Iowa Blue...
