DAILY BUTTERFLIES Page 39

Wow, he's pretty. : ) He matches so well, I almost didn't see him. : )

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

Lily , don't think that's a silver spotted skipper. It might be a Giant Skipper (according to my butterflies of NA) he's very pretty.
That's a pretty Luna.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Wow what a beautiful Luna! I hope I find one of those some day : )
Here is a link to the ones I found on the scarlet milkweed last year. http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/5377/

This guy was playing hard to get with me… but I kept stalking him.

Here he looks a little beat up.

It is good to see the Monarchs, beat up or not. Both of you are lucky! I will definately be ready to assist with the cats this year, just hope they lay some eggs! We didn't have many Monarchs come through last year.
I read an article about butterflies that are used in weddings, birthdays etc. About the out of the country raisers that don't care what time of year they are released and when they are, it may cause their death. Also that so many are arriving dead or in poor shape. They are encouraging people not to use the bfs for those purposes anymore.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, the Monarchs are so pretty! But nanny_56's butterfly is different. I believe the markings on its hind wing show that it's a Viceroy! I hardly ever see those...and have never been lucky enough to get a photo of one.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You are correct, I didn't open the pic to notice. Too sleepy to see it I guess. We don't get many of those as you see.

hey shelia, was that an online article about the butterfly release? I'd like to put that info in my upcoming article.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, let me try to find where I saw it.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Well bust my buttons!

Lizella, GA(Zone 8a)

ooooo, pretty Viceroy, I want one of those too,, pout, pout.
Cat, thanks for info on the NABA.

Mrs. Ed....Tried to find the mention of it ....zip so far. All I remember is that the article did have a pic of a Monarch on it. I will keep an eye out this weekend.

That's okay Shelia. I googled and found a bunch on it. Interesting controversy. North American Butterfly Association says don't do it. The commercial butterfly people all list this whole thing about why it's okay to do it. It looks all official, but when you look into it, the letter is from a guy from the "international butterfly breeders association" claiming that the NABA studies are false

Guess you just have to determine for your self who to believe. I choose to believe someone who does not have any monetary gain.

Edinburg, TX

Well drats...no butterflies to speak of so I took a slow walk around my yard looking for signs of them. I found a few Gulf Frit eggs on the p. foetida and as well as several Giant Swallowtail eggs on the orange tree. Guess I've just been away from the house too much to see them in my yard.

Sat outside today for about an hour and gave up. I did find some insects on a sunflower blossom so I tried out the new Canon XSI on them :o)

Your butterfly frustration reminds me of "All dressed up with no place to go". New camera ready with no butterflies in sight!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Say, what do Black Swallowtails like to build their Chrysalis upon? I have one wandering around the whole box looking for a place. I have a dowel rod, a piece of cactus wood and a bunch of sticks, plus the mesh top. S/he has been on the move for about an hour!

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Try slanting those rods a bit. Mine wander around too like they're really picky about their spots. They seem to favor slanting sticks, branches, etc.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, I have a bunch of slanted twigs in there, plus the cactuswood. S/he has stopped now and seems to be on a slanted flap of cardboard. Guess where?? RIGHT IN FRONT of the "door". Maybe I'll wake up in the morning and there will be a chrysalis.

thanks.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Mine do the same thing. Got so many "nice" perfect sticks and they choose the zipper to the door or the corner edge of cage..

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Darn kids!!! LOL.

Well, i was just thinking that maybe I'd go buy a reptile house or something tomorrow.

Edinburg, TX

Cordele....I stopped using those zippered cages because of just that :o) Seems they would all gravitate to the top and sling themselves from the zipper!!!

Yep...have had this new camera for a couple of weeks now and haven't had the opportunity to try it out properly.

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

Cat did you ever get any picklerweed?

Edinburg, TX

Cordele,

I brought five small plants back from Georgia :o) and planted them near the pond. So far they are doing very well. Just received another couple from Donna in trade so will plant those tomorrow.

If you need any more, just hollar.

Randleman, NC(Zone 7a)

I'm not sure what kind of butterfly this is. All I know is it's the first time I have ever seen it on my butterfly bush. Also interesting red spot on it.

Another shot of it.

This is the more common butterfly I see everyday, but I don't know what it's called! I am new to butterflies, and do not know any of their names. I just know they are beautiful!

Those are beautiful Zebra and Tiger Swallowtails. Looks like part of the Tiger's tail has been torn off, but beautiful nevertheless. I see one every now and then. I'm planting more host trees in hopes they will be more commonly seen around my house.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, what a great treat to get a shot of the zebra ST! I don't get to see the Tiger ST much here. Glad to see some bf action somewhere.

Weston, FL

After those beautiful ZT and TST photos, I am embarrassed to put these fuzzy little photos on. However, I am looking for identification. This one has only 2 wings, so I assume it is some kind of moth or dragonfly. Does anyone recognize it?

Neither the previous creature, nor this one would let me get very close and I don't have an expensive camera, so this is athe best I could get so far. Does anyone have any idea about what I've got here?

Cordele, GA(Zone 8a)

You got some great shots of wonderful kinds of flying flowers there, snuzer. I don't know about the black one with the white tips on the wings, but the second picture of the orange bf looks like a Question Mark to me. I'm certainly no expert and have only seen the Question Mark in pictures here on Daves. Hopefully someone who knows will hurry up and post to tell us. I'd like to know for sure too.

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Wow! I leave for a week and look at all the wonderful sightings! Kim, you cracked me up with your "trimester" remark and puffing on your cigar!

And look at the Zebra ST!!! I'm so glad to see they're living happily in NC.

Snuzer's getting all of the exciting butterflies! I think you have a Ruddy Daggerwing there. I really need to head South next time I get a few days off. All the pretty butterflies live just to the south of me - Julias, Malachites, Atalas...

I'm going to go download more pictures off of my camera and then I'll start a thread just for them so I don't clog this one up. I'll post the link when it's ready!

Melanie

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Wow! Somebody's having a good time seeing those beautiful creatures and chasing them around with a camera...and it's certainly not me! I especially thought that strange Ruddy Daggerwing was cool! Don't remember even knowing it existed. Since I can only experience that one vicariously, maybe someone could try to find cats to raise (and take pics) sometime...please? Look at these below! I want to see more of those cats. They like figs and cashew plants, my book says.

I jsut got this pretty out in the flower bed...

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Linda, those are some awesome pics of the Ruddy Daggerwing, aren't they? I didn't realize the cats looked that cool. My book shows that I'm a bit too far north for them. I know we have strangler figs growing here though so I'll just check them anyway. Books aren't always 100% accurate!

Nanny, beautiful Red Admiral you have there. I think echinaceas are the only way to get them to sit still, LOL!

Everyone, check out my vacation pictures here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/879442/

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

Kim, I think that skipper of yours may be a Hoary Edge. Take a look at this link: http://www.duke.edu/~jspippen/butterflies/hoaryedge.htm
