It's "only" 100 here today, but I looked at the forecast and the next three days are supposed to be 106-107! I really hate when it gets that hot, 9 times out of 10 I wind up getting sick from it, I just don't handle heat well at all. OK, anyone else want to join me in my whining? LOL
Time to whine about the heat again!
Oh I do, I do! LOL. I am so not looking forward to this heat…I just went out to check the mail and thought I would melt on the spot, and it’s not even “hot” yet! I used to love the heat, but now it makes me sick as well :-(. I need to make sure my emergency stash of popsicles is ready for the next few days. I also find putting an icepack or cold washcloth on the back of my neck helps a lot.
WHINING BIG TIME! Thank goodness for A/C but poor plants!
And who has A/C???? I'd better check our forecast for down here. I don't think it's supposed to get that hot here, so look forward to some postings from me about how cooool it is here.... chuckle chuckle......I think we're supposed to stay about 92 the next several days and I've lived with it so far, so I guess I can make it. I've moved a lot of stuff into more shaded areas after our 104 days here.
I have A/C but I still wind up getting sick anytime it gets this hot--if I didn't have to leave the house at all during the day maybe I wouldn't, but I have to get to and from work, and try to walk my poor dog and of course water my plants every 5 minutes! I'm just glad I'm not in EBMUD where they are putting restrictions on watering, the plants in the garden can get by at least a few days without water even in the heat, but my containers need water every day or else I'll end up losing a bunch of stuff. My dog's actually the one I feel the worst for though, he's a 12 yr old Sheltie with very nice long thick black fur, but he really lives for his walks and when it's hot out either I don't walk him because it would be too stressful for him and missing his walk makes him unhappy, or we do go for a walk but it's still too hot out so he ends up unhappy from that.
Well, I was wrong, just checked the weather and they say it actually hit 106 today. But since the forecast said it was only going to be 101, I wonder what that means for the next couple days where they say it's supposed to be 106...is it going to be 111, or worse? I sure hope not! I remember when we had that hideous heat wave 2 summers ago where it hit 115 for a few days here and that was just beyond miserable! Alright, off to have some cheese now! LOL
Time to move again Liz, closer to the Bay! ^_^
Liz, would a cool neck wrap help your Sheltie? You can make one easily if you have some water crystals. Make one for yourself while you're at it!
Hot here too. It was in the 80s here which is so hot for here. I so need to water but I hurt my leg which is killing me at the moment so I am not going out there. I have A/C too but I am still whining.
I went out to lunch with a friend and toured a garden up in the hills and was so miserable. It is so dry all over. The garden I went to was at the Gomes home as in Gomes Nursery. The Gomes are the family who used to do the Macy's Easter Show in the SF store.
Mr. Gomes showed me pics of the Oakland Garden Shows from years past where his and his father's displays dominated the show. Puts the SF Flower and Garden Show to shame. I think the shows were in the 50s. The senior Mr. Gomes is dead and his son (the man I visited) is in his mid 80s, such a delightful man. His son is running the nursery now.
The view across his backyard and from all the Eastern windows across the back of his house was just amazing.
Sue--it's my own fault I'm here, most of the houses I looked at when I was moving down here from Martinez were in Castro Valley or the Hayward hills where it would have been at least a few degrees cooler. But no, I had to pick the 3 mile commute and and a house that was 30 years newer! Oh well, I think the commute makes it worth it especially with gas prices going up so much. And I'm not sure how much cooler it really is over there, and the house probably wouldn't have had A/C so I'd still be whining! LOL One of these days when I figure out how to have a job I can telecommute to full time, I'm going to move up around Bodega Bay or Jenner and enjoy nice freezing fog all summer!
Kathleen--I'll have to try the cold neck wrap for him...I'm not sure if he'll feel it much through his fur but it's worth a try. Either that or take him outside and hose him off! LOL I have a brand new box of Frosty Paws for him too so when we do go for a quick walk I give him one of those when we get back home.
Kell--where is this Gomes nursery? I can't stand thinking there's a nursery around here that I never heard of! Or is it one of those ones that's only open if you make an appointment? I'm sure his garden was amazing, and that view is definitely to die for!
I need to jump in on this whining too - it was 103 degrees yesterday, predicted high today of 107 degrees. I live by the Sacramento River and it normally cools off at nights here with the delta breeze, but no breeze was to be had yesterday. On the other hand, the building where I work is nice and cool - probably cooler than it needs to be.....
Hope it cools off soon for you northern folk, and I hope we don't get hit next.
Ditto....
I hope our heat doesn't head your way! It hit 109 here today and it's supposed to be the same for the next two days, then Friday I think it's going to "cool off" to the mid 90's but that will actually feel good in comparison! LOL
That's just the worst..I can't imagine. It worries me that our weather is getting more and more erratic. I do not want to live with that kind of heat!
106 in the shade here in the Garlic Capital. Hope it cools off for the Festival. Glad I'm retired from the GF parking lot, but DH is still volunteering!!!
I sure hope it doesn't hit down here...everything I have to do comes to a standstill in that kind of heat. Wasted time...
We were back in the 70s today. Thank goodness. I really can't take the heat. I hope it holds here. 109, jeez forget about it. I would stay inside all afternoon. Tomorrow I have to go to Dublin so I guess I will suffer.
Liz, Gomes is in Oakland. I think they specialize in rhodies and azaleas. I have never been there either but have heard about them for years mainly in regards to their incredible rhododendrons.
I can't believe you were in the 70's Kell, you're not that far from me! Definitely prepare for the heat over here tomorrow, the forecast says 108 but today's forecast was 106 and it got a few degrees hotter than they thought so who knows what it'll really be tomorrow!
I'm going to have to look up Gomes, my one and only rhodie has to live in a pot because I don't have any garden beds that have appropriate conditions for them so I really shouldn't go there, but I've got room for a few more pots where my 'Mi Amor' is hanging out!
You must definitely be closer to the bay Kell, because we were in Hayward today, off Industrial and it was HOT!
I actually spent the day inside but Tom told me that. I have hurt my leg and am suffering not in silence I might add! But I am very close to the Bay, we can walk right over to it.
What were you doing on Industrial? Nosy people want to know! There is a HD over there. Any plants? LOL There is a pot place too.
Liz, if you go to Gomes, let me know how it is please.
Yeah, been to that HD, wanted to stop today but had to just drive by, took DD to a car dealer, they bought a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner.
Oh, not a new plant place? LOL. Foget that then! Are they getting closer to be able to get their own place?
I wish.
Actually, they are leaving tomorrow to visit his Mom up past Shasta, they are thinking of moving there now. I refuse to talk about it.
I think Tom's internal thermometer is probably off a little! Guys always seem to have more tolerance for heat and cold than we do, so he probably thought he didn't feel that hot so it must be in the 70's! It was in the 90's in Oakland and low 80's in the City yesterday so I don't see how you could have been cooler than they were! I think even Half Moon Bay was at 78.
I'll definitely let you know how Gomes is if I go...I have no idea when I'll get there though!
I think it's supposed to approach 110 in Sacramento today. I don't like the heat very much either, but what's really getting to me is the thick blanket of smoke hanging around too. The heat and the smoke combined just makes everything feel oppressive. And it's weird; I look out the window and it looks like a cloudy day in November! Cool sunset last night though!
GardenSox - nice to hear from another Sacramento gardener. Whereabouts in Sacramento do you live? I am in the Pocket Area, near the river.
Soilsandup - I'm in the Rosemont neighborhood . . . near nothing but Hwy 50 it seems like!
