CLOSED: OMG... Eeeew!

Woodbury, MN(Zone 4a)

I really don't mind these things destroying my psychotically invasive chinese lanterns, but if they are asian beetle larvae, I need to end their existence ASAP! Anyone know what these slimebags are?

These are larvae of a leaf beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a very large family with many pestiferous species native to the USA.

Hmmmm.... Should I let 'em live?

It depends on your tolerance for their damage. All chrysomelids are plant feeders (leafs or roots), but not all are serious pests. If they're only damaging your chinese lanterns and you don't mind that, you might just let them be, but if they seem to be moving to plants that you want to keep healthy, you might consider some control options.

I'm more worried about when they grow up. They can have my chinese lanterns... Go grub go!

Do you know what that is on their backs?

Ug, no. It looked like dirt, but it's probably something more disgusting, like grub poop...

Uh huh...

Yuck. I feel like I need to go wipe down my monitor now...

LOL! Just wait until they get bigger....

Many leaf beetle larvae use their excrement as a protective armor. That appears to be the case on your larvae!
