My MGs are over 10' long on a 20' dog-eared fence & have tons of foliage (just staring to bloom) but some of the leaves have little holes all over them. Can't really find any bugs on them except 1 tiny black bug.Could somebody please tell me what could possibly be eating my beautiful MG vines? And if you know how do I get rid of them organically w/o effecting my whole garden area (have a massive bed of annuals & perninials in front of them that I don't want to spray w/ chemicals) as it doesn't seem to be affecting anything but my MGs. Thanks for all your help DGers w/ this newbie & her "holey" MGs. Happy Garndening to y'all from N Texas, Carol (sorry no pics - camera is broke & I'm 47 & probably couldn't get it to link right - I figure it's a good day if I can get my e-mails open...LOL)
Help what is eating my MG vines?
Carol - My guess is it is some kind of caterpillar or worm. I've seen caterpillars go into the ground or inside a bud to hide. Unless the worms are doing major damage, I would just keep an eye on things and not do anything unless you see them and can pluck them off. You could try soaking them with insecticial soap and then rinsing the leaves after a few hours. But ... I am like you, I hesistate to spray with anything non-organic because of the the critters that nectar from the blooms. I sure don't want to make the hummingbirds or butterflies sick.
