CLOSED: Red bugs on blueberry stems and leaves

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

First I found a cluster of a couple dozen of these at the base of the blueberry bush. Today we found that they are also in the leaves. This is one of the biggest, about 3/8 inch. All are red and look to me like they are just growing like a true bug. This bush has a number of branches dying and berries turning blue without developing.

Oh, then I found two of these guys on a jade plant on the other side of the yard, with a couple of yellow leaves.

This appears to be a nymph of an eastern boxelder bug (Boisea trivittata; Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/614/
They might not be responsible for the damage to your blueberries; they feed primarily on the developing seeds of boxelder and other maples. However, I also have seen them damage raspberries and pea pods.

I agree- looks like the nymph pictures in Bugfiles (and thanks fro the handy link!)
I do have plenty of maple seeds they are welcome to.
