black twigs on Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin'

Summit, NJ(Zone 6b)

One of my Viburnum dentatum 'Blue Muffin' (Arrowwood Viburnum 'Blue Muffin') has developed a strange problem. Some of the twigs farthest from the root have turned black and do not have leaves at the end. Some of the leaves, have small, dark areas on them. The plant was recently transplanted, but I can’t say for sure it didn’t have the problem before being moved. I just saw several small Arrowwoods (marked as just Viburnum dentatum) in containers at a local garden store with what seemed to be the same problem. The black stuff comes off kind of in flakes when you rub it. Any idea what this could be?

Thanks. -- Lori

My husband just took a picture. Maybe this will help. I guess the color would be better described as dark, not black.

Those are the ends of the pedicels, where the flowers used to be. If the flowers had been pollinated, you would have fruit forming there.

The "black stuff" may very well be just the old flower parts that have fallen. They would rub off in flakes.

Everything else in your picture looks perfectly healthy. Post some more pictures of the whole plant if you can, but I don't see anything that you need to be worrying about.

Other than getting another different Viburnum dentatum clone so that you (and birds) will have ripening fruit to enjoy instead of leftover spent pedicels.

Thanks V V. I'll try to get some pictures posted in the next day or two.

Here's a very blurry picture of one of the discolored leaves

Here's a picture my husband had taken of the twigs, which I think is showing just a little bit of the discoloration starting.

Thanks again. -- Lori
