Does anyone know what kind of butterfly this is? It is bigger than a skipper and smaller than a monarch. It was on a cosmos sulphureus (Cosmic Orange).
CLOSED: Orange butterfly
This butterfly is in the family Nymphalidaae, genus Phyciodes (crescents); possibly Phyciodes cocyta, the northern crescent - see http://www.nearctica.com/butter/plate16/Pcocyta.htm
I just checked your link. That's just what it is. You're a whiz! Thank you.
