The mere unpredictability

of MGs is fascinating...This is one of the nicer side-effects the Moroccan heat seems to produce ...

Awesome colors

Amazing!

That's really neat what you got there with the colors of your blooms! Very unusual!

Sometimes mine will do weird colors when it rains or they get wet from being watered.

Ooooh! The blue star inside your Muraske is beautiful! I am growing that vine as well, but mine has a star the same color as the rest of the blue. Yours stands out more because it is a totally different color of blue star! How pretty!!!

Ditto Becky on the Blue Star

Spectacular!!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I have never seen MG like this before. The are very interesting.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

makshi - Many of the blooms featured are Japanese MGs! Large leaves and large blooms with a mutlitude of colors and patterns. Vines here don't get that long maybe 10-12'. But that may be my hot climate. Most of these like very warm/hot temps during the day. Have you grown many MGs? I have some seeds left from the Fall 2007 collection. D-mail me if you are interested.

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

I grow some every year but nothing fancy. Right now I have a choc. one, ocure (spelling), mini and sunrise seranade. Waiting to see the choc. and the yellow.

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Here's one I grew last year and was hoping to save seeds from, but it never set seeds. There were three different colors of these on one vine. This one was the purple one.

Here's the violet one.

And here's the lavender one.

Judith, they're all beautiful but the purple one is stunning.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Judith - WOW! Those 3 blooms were all on one vine?!! What a great vine! When I grew out my NOID (later renamed "Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidscope"), I couldn't get over all the different blooms on one vine! Just amazing! Yours was so pretty! I would've loved getting some seeds from yours! What a shame that it didn't produce any! :-( Been there, had that happen too!

(Judith) Denver, CO(Zone 5b)

Yeah, it was a bummer.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

I could just imagine that over my back fence....gotta find some seeds. That Tri-color purple is some awesome blossoms!!

In Living Color...(!)

Martin, your Grandpa's color is way cool, is the pigmentation pattern as seen in the photos as it is when the flower first opens, or is this a pattern you see later on in the day?

Joseph

Aschaffenburg, Germany

Hi Joseph, it is when it opens. I think this all happens even on or during the night before they open.

This one, I forget its name is most fascinating and prepares well for opening in the morning at around 5 a.m.

I have noticed that the nils open usually earlier than the purpureas.

looks like the following types

Heian no Kaori

Akatsuki no Hikari

Oreheme

I am currently of the strong impression that the above 3 links are actually the same cultivar but as marketed by different companies...

I find they are slightly different. Mine seems like Ohio's as far as the shape of the bloom is concerned. Also, Beth's version doesn't have variegated leaves and mine does...

Aschaffenburg, Germany

Hi Ron, by the way , I noticed my first purpureas have grown roots in the little fountain I have.

Instead of going out to buy another aquarium pump and pumice, I decided to cut a few of the very sturdy top shoots to see what happens.

After about a week or two, I noticed one of them has grown roots. This will be handy as I will spray the shoots with my mix to make sure all spider mite is killed.

So I can start new plants w/o spider mite.

Martin

PS

I may try the peroxide if this will improve results.

Aschaffenburg, Germany

At a close look, the variegation on the Heian no Kaori may be spider mite again.

One "nice" side effect of these "darn bastar...", at least optically.....

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Martin - Good to know that you have found a rooting method that works for you...

All of Beth's Oreheme plants are variegated...the 2 photos taken during the day show the variegation very clearly, but the 2 photos taken in relative darkness ARE still variegated, just need to look very (!) closely...

I conclude from this that sometimes popolur MGs are availalbe as variegated und unvariegated types. I noticed that with the Kkokans, too.

P.S.

I got this one from Beth, I forgot what it is called. Nice leaves...

Can check with her.

I agree, but if you aren't seeing that the Oreheme posted in the PF's has at least some variegated leaves, then look again...

Hm, this little bit is very unusual.

Yoneda used the hederacea and produced a hybrid, I believe the minibar rose?

Martin

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Is the minibar rose considered an I. nil?

Aschaffenburg, Germany

I think it's a cross between a nil and the above. The people to ask would be Ron or Kevin.
I think Kevin wanted to use it in his mini-breeding program in one of last year's threads...

Aschaffenburg, Germany

One of my pink youjiros -- so far it has produced normal blooms -- has thrown a star-shaped flower today. Morning Glories always puzzle me by what they do...

It will never get into my head that they can produze singles and doubles and sectioned ones and unsectioned ones on one vine...

Unfortunately my camera has gone for a walk today...

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

The Minibar Rose and the related types are Ipomoea nil...

I had previously speculated that it might contain some Ipomoea hederacea based upon the wide spread of the sepals, but Minibar Rose and the visually related types like Cameo Elegance and Beni Chidori have been readily crossed with other Ipomoea nil and so until I know otherwise my position is that they are Ipomoea nil...

Hope that helps...

TTY,...

Ron

P.S. It was Arlan who was focusing on the crystal type leaf variegation and mixing blue in with the usual red colors...
