A Vist to IowaAnn's Lily Garden

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

After seeing the beauty of Llilyfan's garden, I just had to swing up and see IowaAnn's blooms. All 3 of us are in the Lily Society together, along with Moby & Ticker!

It's amazing to me how lilies can grow taller or shorter depending on weather or different soil. Or bloom in differnt shades than my garden for the same cultivar.

If IowaAnn likes a lily, she has room enough to plant an entire area!

This section is a brilliant mix of lilies now, with even MORE buds bringing blooms to come...

I wish MY Dot Com was this big & robust. What a perfect example of a Tango Lily!

It was great to be able to visit two wonderful friends & enjoy their gardens.
Bev's hubby loves the big red Tango "Starburst" lilies most of all.

Thanks for sharing; she really has nice gardens. Miss seeing her face on here more often.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Wow, that is a knock out of a lily!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

"Starburst"calling my name. Wow!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Her is Bev's face--in the midst of yet more lilies....

What a SWEET picture of Bev!

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

Bev LOOKS sweet, but she can dish with the best of you all! LOL

Bev had a great illustration of the difficulties we all have ordering lily bulbs. She ordered 25 gorgeous lilies to plant across the front of her house. In the SAME bag came:

And in the same bag, planted in the same row, she got this one too! I may be a mere student lily judge, but I think I can see a tiny discrepancy in the two lilies.....

Such a tiny difference, how ever did you catch it?? ;)

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

At least the colors sort of match and I like them both.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

I like both lilies. Quite a contrast to them though. Should make a statement.

How did I catch it? LOL Doesn't take hours of study to tell me that someone messed up somewhere...

McGregor, IA(Zone 4b)

I would say it is a keeper - It is a perfect companion, maybe a sport? Or are there other named lilies like the 2nd variety? I know how easy it would be to have several varieties growing together - if you think you are digging up all of one variety and you overlook a few tiny bulbs in the
ground and then plant another variety.
I am seriously enthralled with that red and purplish variety that you ended the last thread with. What is the name of it?
One more question - when is the best time to move lilies ?

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

When you order from a business, you expect them to send you the lily you ordere--not a different one! I don't think anyone could mistake these two lilies as being the same

IHopefully IowaAnn will come on and identify the lilies involved.

The best time to move your lilies is after the stem has turned toally brown. I try to move mine in October or November--but you can still dig later if the ground is not frozen.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Oh, goodness . . I put my FF ones that were potted in the ground today; will they make it?

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

If they were potted, they might take the transition better than ones that were dug up 7 re-planted. The ground is pretty wet too, that should help.

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Thanks!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Ah heck, I just dug up and replanted a few of mine ~ didn't miss a beat.

Lisbon, IA(Zone 5a)

Ah yes, but you have the magic touch, O-Moby-Wan-Kenoby!

OC, CA & Twin Lakes , IA(Zone 4b)

Well I checked mine out this morning and they are not even "wilty" so I guess moving them with all the soil from the pot worked well. I had wanted to use them as an experiment in overwintering in a pot in the boathouse. But when they bloomed so majestically, I just couldn't chance losing them in my crummy experiment.

I'll find some others to experiment on. LOL

What a beautiful Lily garden. I am confused as I do not see the chicken wire that is necessary to encase the lilies so the rabbits can`t eat them to the ground!! If I tried to grow lilies without chicken wire, I would wake up to destruction.Believe me, it seems like every morning they have helped themselves to something else. I am green with envy, Your gardens are lovely. Lesley

Cedar Rapids, IA(Zone 5a)

I don't know how Bev's gardens escape the rabbits--she backs up to a wood and stream. Maybe a magic spell?
