Help with ID
Melly -- i did see that thread... and while it does look very familiar to me... i just can't name it.
I too have a few noID's from this year... i did really good with plant stakes early on ... but then later in the season, June-ish ... i started tossing seeds in to containers, now they've germinated and i have no idea what they are.
I'm gonna wait til the bloom to ask who they are.
heck -- some may be weeds for all i know.
Terese
Terese,
You know I think you are right about waiting til they bloom to ask. I have quite a few unknowns but since I am running out of space in my gardens I thought I would try my luck lol.
It looks a little bit like a marigold, I'm not sure, either!
You know it kinda does look like one.. You know maybe I will wait to pull it up.. It really isn't taking up that much space. Wouldn't be the first time I cared for a weed lol.
I learned the hard way this year that Sharpie markers are not UV resistant. I planted out my WS plants with the white markers, and then all the writing faded off of them. Several mystery plants in my beds are near those markers, so I'm not sure if they are WS plants that I just don't recognize, or if they are weeds that happened to sprout near the markers. I have a bunch that look just like your mystery seedling, so if you figure it out, let me know! LOL
I hate to say this - but I think it might be a weed. I have some that grew when I winter sowed seeds as well. ^_^
My leaves look like marigold, but the flower bud doesn't. It looks like a spike-style flower, like a celosia before it blooms. I hate to say it, but I looked at a picture of ragweed, and it looks awfully similar. I'm printing the picture to take out to the garden and compare.
Sigh. And I've been nursing them along for weeks. . .
Angie
Oh Angie, that is so funny. . . I was out weeding with a vengeance today in the rain and you made me wonder how many little weed-seedlings have I been nursing along for weeks. . . and how many perfectly legit plants have I pulled up 'cause I don't know any better?
I would have hazarded that your NOID was a marigold until you mentioned the flower spikes.
LOL I'll take pictures tomorrow before I yank the suckers. Someone posted this link for Melissa on the Plant ID thread, and it looks JUST like mine (and hers, unfortunately.)

I also found this picture on an Illinois Wildflower site, which clinched it for me, as it shows the flower spikes. Ugh.

It's gotta go! Hope Mellymas gets hers ID'ed, and figures out if she has the same thing or not.
Angie
OH shoot... yesterday when i was doing a lot of weeding... i was actually going to photograph the ragweed i was pulling out. Once you notice the difference between a marigold, ragweed and even cosmos ... you shouldnt have any troubles telling them apart again.
As i mentioned above... the ragweed is "furry" and the marigold has red in the stem.... at least all of ours do [mine and my neighbor's]
Well, I pulled it without taking pictures. DH took the camera to work, and couldn't remember if he brought it home. I saw those flower spikes getting ready to bloom, and just couldn't let that booger go to seed.
Mine did have hairy stems, and when I checked the actual marigolds, they didn't. That clinched it for me. Sorry I wasn't more altruistic. . .I should have waited a day so I could post pictures for you.
Angie
Went out of town to take girls to parents for the summer. Anyway my noid was a ragweed. So once again I put a lot of effort into a weed. Gotta love gardening lol.

I have to admit that I usually mutter an apology to the (many) weed seedlings that I have to pull up each day. That's if they come out easily. The tough SOBs I yank out with a cry of triumph.
