We found this in our daughter's room the other night. I've tried googling it but can't find a picture that matches closely. The closest I have found is an Australian Redback. I've asked around & most say that those are not found in this area (Gulf Coast of Texas). However I am in the US Navy & just returned home from deployment a few weeks ago. Our last port before heading back to the states was Perth, Australia & Hobart, Tasmania. So if it is infact the Australian Redback, we know who picked that one up in port. ha ha ha!
Thanks for your help!
CLOSED: Another what kind of spider is this?
This is an ant-mimic spider in the family Corinnidae (some authorities place it in Clubionidae) and the genus Castianeira, possibly Castianeira occidens - see http://nathistoc.bio.uci.edu/spiders/Castianeira.htm and http://www.spiderzrule.com/spider051/IMG_5154_small.JPG for images. This spider may be known as the red-spotted ant mimic, and is thought to resemble a velvet ant (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) in its appearance and movements.
Thank you for your help! Glad I don't have to be in trouble with the wife for bringing spiders home from Australia! ha ha!
