deformed rooster

Reno, NV

Hi, I have a barred plymouth rock rooster who is about 3 months old. Supposed to be a hen, but she started crowing, so whaddyaknow. This rooster has a broken toe and a hump on his back, and is of course called Quasimodo. Too bad, because his plummage is gorgeous. So far he's basically docile, but has just started challenging me when I come into the pen to feed in the am. But I just shove him with my foot or chase him back, so far so good there. My question is, are there spinal deformities in BRs or tumors on chickens' spines ? And another question is, if he's the only BR in the flock, what kind of chicks do we get ? Are there mutt chickens ? Ok, thanks for any advice !

oh, yeah lots of mutt chickens around here LOL. some really cute pics of chicks folks have hatched from their own mixed brood. however, not knowing what is wrong with his spine makes me leary about letting him breed...

i qahve som ePBRs and love'em. love Reno too, grew up near there.

welcome to Dave's! be sure and introduce yourself in a current thread, sometimes folks are slow to notice a new thread... once you post in a thread, it will pop up on your screen whenever someone else posts to it...

Hi, yes, I am new to this forum and I like the poultry conversations, you guys are funny ! My lumpy rooster managed to cover a hen this morning and caused quite a ruckus. He chose my ugliest hen and trapped her between the lilacs and fence. My top hen rushed over, and then the dogs, then all the other chickens. Quasi emerged victorious, with several feathers dislodged and a stunned look about him. My other chicken breeds are Amerucana, Courcevor (sp ?), Dorking, Brahma, Brown Leghorn, Silver Spangled Hamburg, New Hamp Red, Sussex. At least I think that's what they are- some came in a Rainbow Assortment from MurrayMcMurray hatchery last year. We have 15 chickens and also 3 Bronze turkeys. The turkeys are very friendly and enjoy "helping" when one is loading something in a truck or trailer out back. When can you tell the gender of turkeys ? Anyone out there know ?

It was really hot here today and the turkeys joined the dogs in the wading pool...is this normal ? Anyway, I think they are fairly smart, I don't believe the popular belief that they aren't. Maybe if you have hundreds living in one building, but then they are just insane, not stupid...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

it cools their feet. but they shouldn't stnad in it too deep could cause scale problems. hot here too, trying running water on the ground for them, just make little puddles. breifly water the dirt in their pen to cool it down. i even spray the roof of the henhouse for cooling effects...

glad your dogs don't eat you rturkeys!

LOL my mama dog, yorkie is baby sitting the chicks. She has not left their side except to feed her puppies or go outside. The cat came in and did a what the h**l is that, and then wanted back outside. I have not even let my boys around them yet. We have them 2 trained to go get the squirrel or the rabbits. So when we put the chicks in the pen we will have to tell them no those are babies.

Our dogs don't bother the poultry. One is a bluetick coonhound, and he digs a big hole to sleep in behind the poplar (shade). The chickens hang out with him, sometimes clamber over him to get a bug or something. The hound just snores on. The other dog is a La Bointer ( lab/ pointer ; made that up cuz it sounds fancy ), and he LOVES the birdies, but respects them, too. The turkeys challenge him, so he will wander off when it gets too intense. Attached is the logo I designed for selling our eggs around here. Proceeds go into a college fund for my son ( he is one).

that should be ineteresting. our cat has actually been quite protective of our chicks.

back on the topic of roos [also relating to adding new birds to the flock], our poor apricot was on some THING today. at first i thought he had my dear OEG, but no, it was the future downspout for the gutters...

he tries the older hens and they spar him and chase him. most of the younger hens aren't ready yet. he was hatched by a duck, then raised in the house over the winter. we kept putting him out, and he wouldn't get along with them and ended up roosting in the entry way for quite some time. half the time at night i have to PUT him in the henhouse. i wonder if he will be able to breed anything at all?

on another note, our dear polish went out with Chuck into PH#1 at a young age. never were they with our main flock, but they have always seen each other through wires. today. after our failed attempt to devise a nice cage to keep them from pekcing each other, i just let them out! and they ahd so much fun! Nancy even had th gall to go to the mian pen and eat out of hte feeder. Apple was the only one to dislike that, she is a bossy brithces! so at four months old, i guess we will let them free range. hopefully they will stay close enough to the others to not get got by anything overhead...

maybe Apricot can convince the delaware chicks that he is a roo...

oh, i LOVE THAT!

Here's Quasi, in all his lumpy glory. You can just see his broken toe on the backfoot...the toe is at a 90 degree angle !!!!!

poor little guy!

as sweet as he is, i would NOT use him for breeding, just maybe so you can call your eggs fertile [my customers do not care].

his coloring is poor at best for his breed, and he sports the wrong comb style [although that is my favorite comb style!]

tf

i ahve a little guy named floopy who was landed on by my dairy goats hooves... he has a few broken toes. his coloring is OK, he has a really funny looking comb. he too is a PBR. take extra special care of him. any hen pecking him gets tossed out...

Reno, NV

Tammy Faye, maybe Apricot just needs a manlier name to convince those gals. Try "Terminator",and see if that gets him results !

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

sorry, my oldest son names all his chickens after food. and apricots came from Apple's egg. and we were hoping for a pullet. LOL we have a pullet named Chuck. maybe when he gets his second chance at life with another flock we can try something like that, something red, something mean, something with pretty green tail feathers ^_^

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

well, if anything ever happens to his uncle Best, those hens WILL like him, even if i have to perform AI!!!
