Mom just found an 8 ft (she says) snake in the hen house. She had be suspecting something stealing her eggs, she has 4 hens about 3 yrs old now. Fed it a wooden egg and still there or there is more than 1 snake???? Going to feed it golf balls today and see if we can get rid of it. Maybe I can get my Brave DH up there to go fetch this anaconda. Gawd what did I get myself into, I hate snakes.
feeding the snake
Just found one yesterday in the garage where we are brooding our keets, directly UNDERNEATH the brooder. I swear that thing was at LEAST 8 feet long. Luckily all keets were present and accounted for though.
*shudder*
my son would ike it as a pet LOL... if it isn't a venomous snake, don't kill it, just move it WAY away from the henhouse, and it will find mice and other critters to eat.
then get hardware cloth to go around the tops of those stalls. most snakes and small mice can get through chicken wire...
i hope she has the snake trapped somehow till DH gets it, good luck!

Sorry..this one had an unfortunate meeting with a garden hoe...it's the only way my husband could stop me from screeching. I suppose he could have moved the snake and cut MY head off with the hoe...but he would have had a lot of explaining to do at Thanksgiving. ;)
^_^ LMBO
Oh my gosh, thank goodness we don't have many snakes around here! My DH was down by the pond doing some work a couple of mouths ago, and ran up here to have me look up poisoning snake types in MO. This little snake family he found ended up not being the poison kind, so he said, wanna come see 'em? I said that I don't believe I do!
Hope you all can get it out!
Christy
we have a cat ( babies to be here soon or she is going to pop) for the mice, no snakes wanted no snake is a good snake. Not when they are stealing my eggs. No not no but heck no................no snakes allowed. I will get some hardware cloth to protect my new babies. We will start with 1 5x5 pen for the first couple weeks. Then get them separated out as they mature and we see what kind and what not. I have 10 stalls to play with. Hurry up post office call me dang it anyway.
don't wati for htem to call you. call and tell them you will be waiting by the phone for their call...
I mow every inch of our acreage with the exception of the tiny patch that is adjacent to the road. I saw a snake out there 10 years ago when I was mowing and have refused to go anywhere near it since. That's where my mowing stops. My husband has to finish those two or three passes with the mower when he gets home.
I hate snakes.
HATE snakes.
HATE HATE HATE them.

I think this is just a black snake, not sure have not seen it yet and mom said she didnt stay around long enough to get a good look at it. We have rattlers, pigmy rattlers, water moc's, copper heads. All bad news. One of my daughters was bit last year by a baby pigmy, gosh the H**l we went thru at the 3 different hospitals she went to. That is another story.
i am guessing if the keets knew what a snake would do to them, they would hate them too...
Tia, i DON'T want to know. i have three children, and don't want any close encounters!!!
I remember at another place I owned, a snake I had mowed over at least 2 times, a small copper head. You COULD not get me out there again in a million years. I had ran over it with the mower, and it was all flopping around. Ran me right into the house. It was maybe 6-8 inches long. I hate snakes!!!!!!!!!!
Funny because in all the time that we've had poultry out here (oh at least 10 years) that is the first time I've seen a snake anywhere near my baby birds. This is the first year we've had guineas though...so maybe the snake new what full grown guineas will do with a snake?
HATE snakes.
smart snake! keets make a really high pitched sound, maybe he heard it?
L2G...ewwwww. I don't blame you. Just...ewww.
they didnt want to take her at norman hospital cause they didnt know to much about venom go figure, and then she went to childrens hospital where there was more knowledge but she was 19 yrs old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they didnt want to treat her there due to her age. All this is being transfered in an ambulance. Can you say $$$$$$$$$$$$. $4000 a dose of anti venom, times 3 I think.
TamaraFaye...I'll bet that's what drew it to the brooder. Baby chicks are actually fairly quiet when they are watered, fed and warm...keets seem to like to make noise all the time unless they are sleeping.
so we need to devise a soundproof brooder. as i have 120 keets coming in august, and they won't, i said WILL NOT be in the house!
L2G2, 6-8 INCHES???? can i say "wuss"?
yes u can, i am a wuss NO snakes allowed
And here I thought it was funny when the snake bit me 4yrs ago. Since it was a blue racer, I knew it wasn't poisonous.
I was cutting deer netting away from where we were going to put the henhouse and it was caught up in the netting. I wasn't thinking and cut its head loose before cutting the body loose. It hit me once. I didn't even notice my hand was bleeding until I was through cutting it loose. When I called the hospital about it, they laughed and told me to call poison control. (They laughed too, and so did my dr.) I ended up getting a tetanus shot because I hadn't had one in 11yrs. Still funny.
GG
nothing funny about a snake. gives me the hebby jebbies No way. If some one dont know that redneck lingo that is a long EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Blue green red brown no way.
my husband killed 2-five foot copperheads last year. i do not go out back near where he killed them
LOL.....this whole thing is funny! No snakes for me either!! My DH put my DS up to bringing a teeny tiny 6 inch (gulp) garden snake and it was all I could do to not swallow my tongue!
Don't worry, my DH is the one that doesn't have anything to do with them. I have always been able to handle them and have never been afraid of them.
Now, if it's a bee, that's another story. Of course, I am allergic to bee venom so maybe that's why I am terrified of them. Ditto for wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets.
GG
I had never seen any animal scare my DH at all.......then we got up right close to some horses. He doesn't really know anything about their behavior and I think the length of the legs got him. He was even a little nervous and uncomfortable looking around the baby we were looking at. This is the man I have seen an uncountable amount of times put his whole head right into the side of a kicking cow, so he could milk her.......so I was surprised and amused all at the same time. : )
Christy
We have Bull Snakes here. If we want to find one .... they're always hiding under something. They 're not a problem for the poultry and don't get much larger than 3-4 ft. I'm glad they're around. If the Bull Snakes weren't here ... we'd have Rattlesnakes. When it come to a choice ... I'm all in favor of Bull Snakes. They eat mice and do not bother my keets or chicks.
The only things that make me cringe are maggots. Yucko : 0
Excuse my ignorance, but what are keets? Robb.
They are baby Guineas Robb : )
My mother told me of her old relative, Dame Margaret, keeping Guinea fowl because they would tackle foxes and racoons; protecting the other farm fowl. I haven't seen them often in North America but they are still popular in France... and often on restaurant menus. Robb.
yes Robb, quite tasty, they are! we have quite a few threads here about guineas... and pictures too!!!
yep, Kelly, gotta love those Bull snakes, even the ones that look like rattlers, shake their tails like rattlers, and strike at you to scare you! i don't try to catch them, but glad to have them around. if i had mor ebull snakes i would not have a cotton rat problem. we did see one across the road recently so hopefully he is eating good. some neighbors have old cars in their yards [neatly] and so they intentionally bring home bull snakes from their work places to prevent rattlers from living under the cars...
Christy, afraid of horses, hmmmm, sounds like he found something he didn't know enough about, and ignorance can be scary?
maggots. well, pertaining to snakes, when i starte dmy bucket system [goingnicely btw], DH remiended me that he had put a dead rattler from his work site into a metal can and planned to skin it, didn't get around to it, then HE grew maggots, by accident of course. so far DH is cpooperating with the intentional growing project. i do recommend a steady flow of SMALL carcasses, and only one bucket hanging at a time, just have another on stand by...

TF,
My 19 yr old surprised a medium sized Bull Snake in our shop-warehouse. It hissed and curled up and wagged his tail just like a Rattlesnake and trid to bite him. He came running into the house yelling he'd found a Rattlesnake and was a bit agitated and intimidated. Better to have Bull Snakes ... any day than the real deal. Kelly in Moxee
yes, they really don't like to be disturbed when they are sleeping. i have tried to move some from on the side of the road, during their sun bath.... won't do that again without a BIG LONG STICK! and maybe three other people?
I love snakes! We have gopher and king snakes around here and the workers are always killing them. I try to find ways to rescue them. In late summer the baby gophers lay out in the vinyard roads. So cute, like little persian carpets. The king snakes are usually striped yellow and black--but some are red and black. Stunning. And they eat rattlesnakes--which we have a lot of too.
I don't like black widow spiders--or most spiders in fact. But snakes are neat. Even been bitten by racers and it didn't bother me. I wonder why some people don't like certain animals and others don't mind?
Now maggots are gross--but they can't help it;0)
was liekly our parents doing. i still can't stand rats!
LOL mom put golf balls out in the nests and low and behold one is gone. Please don't be mad, we cant take the snakes of any kind. I am the person that will go on the other side of the road to run one over. OMG I watched the movie snakes on a plane, I still have visions.
there ya go, if it ain't our Moms' faults, it is the media LOL...
me, mad? in which sense of hte word?
tf
that I kill snakes.
i know silly, you didn't get that play on words, did you? of course i am not mad. and i wouldn't care if someone got mad that i had to shoot a cat and a dgo that i caught killing chickens... well, i would care if they felt hurt, but it wouldn't cause me grief, i would just understnad that they aren't me....
kill away dear, gotta protect those chicks!
now, i am not mad, nor am i crazy, but that does depend on who you ask...
