If you are wanting to reproduce a tree off a sucker, a common way is to take a cutting a root it. It can be done in several ways. Softwood cuttings are taken when a plant is in leaf and will usually require a mist system, or a dome that will insure proper humidity and also so the leaves don't dry out. Once they are toast, so are your cuttings.

The other way is to take a hardwood cutting when the plant is dormant. In the winter take cuttings around 6 inches and cover them with a moist sawdust or mulch. When you start to see a callus form on the end of the sticks, often several weeks to months, they are getting ready to root. Often they will root in that media or you can transplant them. The key is to have the roots form before they leave or once again your cuttings will be toast. Keep the sticks in a cool area, or a refridgerator. If you put them in a ziplock type container with some saran wrap with holes, it should work pretty good.

The one key, if you are taking a cutting off a sucker, make sure the sucker is the same as the mother plant, it could be an understock that was grafted or budded onto, and the sucker can be totally different. Good luck
