rat repellent

Gulfport, MS

I need some input about "ultrasonic" pest repellents I've seen advertised and wonder if anyone knows anything about them. The one I am thinking of is a Bell and Howell that plugs in an outlet.
For various reasons I can't use poison or traps and I wonder if anyone has used such a device. I live in a wooded area and there is some construction nearby and I suppose the critter (or critters) have been displaced. They they have not got in the living area of the house--I have just heard them in the walls and in the closet where the air conditioner is housed. Help with this or any other thoughts will be appreciated!!

My mother used one of those repellers in the barn where she had furniture stored. Before she got the thing, we used to have to sweep out the room, a few times a year, because the rat droppings would be so thick...after she got the contraption...it was dusty in there, but no sign of rats. She was very pleased with it. Not sure what kind it was.

The BEST thing I have found for capturing rodents like this (read: pocket gophers) is a trap called the "Big Snap-E" rat trap. It is easy to bait (place peanut butter in the bait cup). The rodent cannot steal the bait without getting trapped. It is clean, death is instant, and it is easy to dispose of the rodent and re-set the trap. I have tried other methods, and this is the only sure way to get rid of them that I have found.

We purchased a couple a few years ago after finding droppings in the drawers. Their selling point was the sonic sounds emitted that chased mice away. They apparently worked because we bought a few more. We purchased half a dozen more to use in the motor home and the droppings were no longer evident when we brought it out in the spring.
My sister had mice in her home and I bought a brand called Riddick. It used the house wiring to send out a signal. It worked but not all that well. Certainly not as well as the manufacturer claimed.
You'll get about two years use from the electric ones. My SU [spousal unit] claims she can hear them when plugged in. I can't. We've never had to deal with rats.

Now we use Bounce fabric softener sheets; changing them after a couple of months when the smell dissipates. When the weather warms the mice are happy to live outside again.

Suppose the "ultrasonic" thingy would work to keep squirrels out of the attic?? I don't want to kill them up there, we had one die a fewq years back and had to evacuate our bedroom for a month, ugh!

If you could check it everyday.......but the ratzapper does kill! I've not heard good things about the ultrasonic thing.

Thanks for all the input. Misty, I will think about the rat zapper. I wonder if I would be able to empty it if I caught "my rat" I have some friends I call on to do things I absolutely cannot physically do, but I would hesitate to ask anyone for that kind of favor. I'm not helpless, just chicken.

You just pick up the container and "dump" the varmint in the trash, seal it up and go. You probably wouldn't even see it, except the tail. If you go on that website, you'll see a picture of it. IF you have a cat, don't let your cat near the trap.

Just shut the switch off, bring a bag with you and dump in the bag, there is no mess as it is electrocuted.

I beieve in both the electric sonic emitters and the Rat Zapper. I have no more rodent traffic in my house for the GE pest repellers. I got mine at Big Lots.
I have also worn a sonic emitter for mosquitoes and that also worked.
