CLOSED: Caterpillar

Van Etten, NY(Zone 5a)

This caterpillar is about 2 1/2 inches long. I live in western New York state. Does anyone know what it is? I thought maybe a tent caterpillar but aren't they much smaller?

They get to about 2 1/4 inches. It looks so much like one, but the tent caterpillar has a white stripe down the middle of its back with a black strip on each side. The spots are below the stripes. Then there's another orange stripe running down its side.

Will have to look to get an ID.

Ah - I was speaking of the Eastern Tent Caterpillar. Yours is the Forest Tent Caterpillar.
