Do all Sinningia's have a dormant period? Here I was thinking I wanted to buy a few but if they go dormant I know me ... I would totally forget what's what and think it was a plant that died and the soil would get dumped! It's happened a few times around here! Then later I will find a pot or two with a label taped to the side and wonder "what ever happened to that plant?" LOL.
End of june almost july blooms
Lin, I just started with sinningias but I think the major ones for going dormant are these big ones I love so much.......it is in the closet right now in vermiculite and a shoe box (LOL).
I am anxious to propagate the easy ones such as Gabriel's Horn.......you can't kill it! Jan sent me Texas Zebra which is in a 4" pot and I want to propagate that one, too. She said she must have taken dozens of cuttings from the plant while she had it.
I took this picture one minute ago. Gabriel's Horn has never stopped blooming since I got her. Someone sent me one like her that blooms pink and I can hardly wait until she roots and blooms.
What a gorgeous red Gail.
My camera doesn't do the true color justice. It is described as being a fuschia orange and that is a perfect description! I love this one because you can put as many plants as you want in a pot and she loves it. She is in a 4" pot and outgrowing it as I type.
Gail ... that S. Gabriel's Horn is really beautiful! I love it that you don't have to separate them ... they can all grow in one pot together, my kind of growing - sure makes it easier not having to be constantly dividing and re-potting! I'm watching the Marketplace for Sinningia's to show up for sale! ^_^
I never ever catch up! There aren't enough hours in the day for me. (of course I could sleep less). Maybe I will just stick her in the kitchen sink to remind me to take cuttings . I can't get over how quickly sinningias root, but Bonnie and Jan says it takes a little while for the actual tuber to form. (I don't care if I get sinningias without a tuber as sinningias are tough plants)
Gosh.......everyone gets up early and has a party on the AV forum before I have my first cup of coffee ........
LOL Gail ... I stay up late at night, usually until 1:00 a.m. and I am always up early in the morning too ... by 7 or 8 at the latest! I get so dragged out sometimes I just wish I could take a nap during the day. This afternoon I sat down and was doing a crossword puzzle and fell asleep but only for 10 minutes! :( Eventually it catches up with me and I have to sleep! I know my problem is too much caffeine! I don't drink coffee very often cause I don't bother making it when my DH doesn't drink it. I drink Diet Pepsi all day ... too much soda! My DH used to buy me the caffeine free stuff but it tastes different to me and I don't like it.
I love the Starbuck's Vanilla Frappachino's - they have lots of sugar so I try not to buy them too often!
Lin, I could never survive without at least 9 hours of sleep a day. I have always been that way and so are my adult children. Their spouses don't understand it as the husbands don't need but 4-6 hours a sleep maximum at night.
As I get older I even take a 45 minute nap on top of 9 hours.........but when I am up and going , I never stop........
I live on coffee, homemade strong tea and Diet Cokes all day. Now they are saying that 3 to 4 cups of caffeine a day is healthy for women.......or so my adult daughters tell me .
I think we are not too far away before we can get Frappachinos with not only skim milk but made with Splenda instead of sugar, too...........
Hey Girls;
i have been drinking pepsi all day long for years, don't think thats gonna change.;lol as far as sinns going dormant, usually it's the big ones & species that do. 80% of mine do not go dormant.I have a big job ahead of me today. i have to rearrange my plant room & get rid of some of the stuff i don'rt use. what a mess it will be, but nice if i ever get it done. lol
mrsbonnie
Hey Bonnie, if you have any energy left you can come to my house and clean, LOL. Oh, I have so much spring, summer and fall cleaning to do inside this house ... maybe I will wait until winter to tackle it. ^_^
Serious caffeine junkie here. I exercise every day, go to yoga and Nia, and I haven't eaten meat since Nixon was in office, rarely drink, so I figure I get one vice. And I am a better person with caffeine, really.
I hit the jackpot on bubble bowls for my episcias this weekend--tag sales often have cheap bubble bowls, I guess they're used for fake plants or fish or something other than plants, I can't imagine why. LOL In any case, I got seven of them for a grand total of $2.15.
I'm playing with a new method of rooting small episcia cuttings, I hate how the leaves that touch the soil often rot, I think it starts a general downward spiral with the whole cutting, so I've cut pieces of landscape fabric, rubber banded it over the pot, and punched a hole in the center for the cutting. We'll see how it works!
I'll work on some pictures, my african violet "Hawaiian Pearl" is blooming, I have a couple of "Buckeye" AV's blooming as well. My streptocarpus Cassandra is loaded with buds, that'll be pretty when it takes off. Can't wait!!
And I am a better person with caffeine, really.
ROFL!! If anything describes me, this would certainly be it!! I need a sign that says that to hang in my kitchen... LOL
Jan, that Sinn. 'Aurora Borealis' is absolutely gorgeous!!
Gail, all your Sinns are beautiful, but 'Merry Christmas' is truly one of the most spectacular ones I've ever seen! I love Strep 'Franken Jane Elizabeth', too!
Kim, those look like viable seed pods to me, but if they dry up and fall off, you'll know they're not. ;o) On my plants, they don't usually swell at all if they're not fertile. 'Mother's Day' is so elegant! I love that bloom shape. Slipper, I believe they call it?
Bonnie, Night Edition is lovely! I'm a sucker for the lighter colored throats!
Nancy, I love Purple Panda! It has those yellow streaks I've become so fond of. ^_^
Edited because, evidently I haven't had enough of that aforementioned caffeine to be able to spell correctly.
