YOu know I hate you that your Sinningia Aurora Borealis is blooming. Oh my gosh is she a thing of beauty. I am so jealous! I have taken so many cuttings from mine that she probably won't bloom for another year (LOL)

Wow Jan!
I will just have to post the same plant but with a picture from today as she has opened more. Her name is Merry Christmas.........very appropriate name for July 4th coming up.......

When I went to camp as a child we were always in camp during July 4th and we celebrated Merry Half Christmas!!! My daughters went to the same camp and now my granchildren are there for July 4th also!

How did you learn to do that art work when I am sitting here with your photo elements.....maybe I will remember tomorrow to send her back to you. That is so cute!

WOW is all I have to say about both of those pictures...

Jannich is the one who got me started with sinningias. She ordered seed from The Gesneriad Society so I was the lucky recipient of 10 of her sinningias. Now I have ordered sinningia speciosa seed to copy her!!!

She ordered the German Strep seed so we will have the wonderful hybrids of the Fleischle (is that how you spell the great German hybrids of streps?_)

Here is another bloom from one of Jan's babies she sent me........it bloomed back in May but I will never forget her...........

Pretty plants! Love all three plants.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

WOW The color on all three of those is amazing!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Jan is a very good grower from seed. She is my mentor! Since the great big sinningias need so much light, I am having to change from one fixture of two bulbs to 2 fixtures of 2 bulbs each for my new plants (many months from now) that I am going to grow from seed I ordered.

Let me see if I can find a picture of a Jack Evan Purple she sent me........she sent me all these sinningias when they were baby plants.
Bummer.......I can never find what I am looking for in my picture files.
So.............I will just post any bloom so we can keep the blooms going.

Sinningia Scentimental Journey still has two new blooms on her

Good Morning Everyone!

All I can say is AMAZING!
Those Sinningia shots are just stunning!!! GREAT growing everyone.
I ordered a bunch of sinningia seeds from the gesneriad society also. Although I have never been great at starting seed, I keep trying.
So far (after 13 days) only 2 sprouts but I'm not going to give up.
I am going to have SO MANY strep crosses to share with everyone who wants to grow seed this winter. I sure hope there is enough of you interested in trying to grow out some of this seed :)

I attempted my very first sinningia cross this morning as I had 2 sinningias blooming at the same time. It will be a long time before I have 2 sinningias blooming at the same time again so I thought I better jump on the opportunity.

I crossed (as the momma plant): Ozark Rosy Cheeks

With Mother's Day as the daddy. I know, what a name for a daddy right? *lol*

I'm hoping for a rasperry color with Mother's Day shaping? :)

Bonnie, I LOVE that out of Townee........very pretty.
As far as pictures, do you have a macro setting on your camera? Usually it is a button with a flower on it. You want to push that button so the flower shows up on your screen. This allows you to take really close up clearer pictures :)

I hope that helps :)

Now tomorrow, Mother's Day will be the momma plant and Ozark Rosy Cheeks will be the daddy donor (back cross) and MAYBE, just MAYBE I will get two successful pods. Quite frankly though, I'd be happy with one but two would be awesome too :)

I can't wait to play seed this fall winter :)

It has been so muggy and damp (cold) here lately. Great weather for hybridizing *lol*

Gail, I look at your pictures and I say.........wow, look at all that pollen *lol*
Sooo pretty :)

Kim

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi Kim;
I don't have a macro setting, but have one for taking pictures of plants which i have been useing, maybe it's just me, my camera was only 100.00 maybe thats why, usually you have to pay more for better pictures.anyway here are a few more i jyust took, hope these are better.this is hand painted

That one came out really nice Bonnie. Very pretty strep :)
You have some very pretty babies Bonnie :)

Kim

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Bonnie, I'm SO excited about my first sinningia cross.
I have TONS of strep crosses that have taken and are going to be beautiful babies and can't wait to harvest seed from them all for everyone but I am really enjoying sinningias right now and really want to start some seed so hopefully this cross will take.
The thing I like about sinningias is that it only takes a month for the seed to ripen, for streps it's 4 months. So for 4 months you have to sit on pins and needles as the pod could just wither at any given moment. With sinningias the wait is shorter.
I am hoping to add a few more sinningia to my collection this fall so that I can play with them over the winter. Hopefully for my birthday hubby will let me place one more last order before winter. I'm hinting to him now.....work it, work it, work it *lol*

Kim

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Bonnie (or anyone who might know) can you tell me if this looks like a developing pod? I have never seen one in person.
So far Mother's Day has had 3 flowers. I "selfed" 2 of them because I didn't have another sinningia blooming and the one that is blooming right now I plan to cross with Ozark Rosy Cheeks tomorrow or Wednesday.
I have been thinking these were pods so I'm HOPING I'm right but am not sure.
Does she look pregnant to you?

Here is one of them:

Thumbnail by kimskreations

And here is the other "selfing".

I sure hope these are what fertile pods look like. What happens if they are not fertile? All new ground to me.

Oh, I almost missed a new thread with Gorgeous Sinningia's photo's! I gotta remember to check the AV forum listing for new threads more often!

Jan: That Sinningia in your first photo is really Awesome! I love that variegated foliage and that bloom is gorgeous.

Gail: Well, what can one say about S. Merry Christmas? That has to be one of the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen. It looks perfect for a holiday flower!

Mrsbonnie: I think your pictures are great. You have some really beautiful plants! Some of y'all really have a Gessie Florist in your homes!

Kim: Love that Ozark Rosy Cheeks! You are really doing great with these gessie plants, aren't you? I sure wish I had the patience it takes to collect seeds, pollen and do stuff like crossing and hybridizing. I just can't imagine it!
I googled Sinningia seed pods and found this: http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.gesneriads.ca/Images5/2049s.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.gesneriads.ca/gensinn.htm&h=82&w=100&sz=4&hl=en&start=10&um=1&tbnid=s7SDXisIqDCy0M:&tbnh=67&tbnw=82&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dimages%2Bof%2Bsinningia%2Bseed%2Bpods%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DX Scroll down to Sinningia Globulosa, shows a pic of a whole plant and a pic of seed pods. Kinda cool looking!

Good Morning Nancy and Lin :)

Lin thank you for the link to the sinningia pods, I looked at them but because that is a species and mine is a hybrid the pods look quite different to me. Mine are not furry nor are they as round. Maybe I don't have pods afterall *sniff, sniff*

Nancy, that Panda is a cutie. Love the white thumbprints on the 2 top lobes :)

FINALLY, sun today :) Now the lawn needs to be mowed from all that rain.

Lin, I would have FREAKED to have experienced the awful time you had with the pool guys. Unbelievable. So sorry you had such a hard time. Hopefully their boss will do something for you to recify the situation.

A late good morning wish to all. Loving all these pictures. I have to get with the program and move this morning!

Bonnie........my computer tech told me about a fabulous camera for only 80.00. He used to be a professional photographer and it is a Kodak Easy Share with a macro button on it for flowers. I can't remember the specific camera but can find it in an email should you decide you want it..........

back to work..........

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi and good late morning hellos.... Well my nerves are not good today and I can't seem to get my stands the way I want them... I first got up this morning and went on my banking to find I had a 0 balance I said holly moley... Then went back to banking after I woke up from passing out...LOL To find they had put all my money in the wrong account.. We have our house money taken out and put in one account and then have another account for like insurance, taxes you know the awful stuff... I had 4 over draft fees also... I passed out again...LOL I called them and said something here is not right... Well bless his soul he told me was his fault that he put the money and allot of money it was in the wrong account and of course the over drafts would also be refunded... WOW and I thought I had no more money to buy plants..LOLOLOL
I also just got off the phone with Brennan’s as I really wanted to know why my strep leaves have a tendency to curl at the ends... It really bothered me. Well she asked if they were long and I said yes then she asked me if they are touching my shelves and I also said yes and she said in the wild they would do this and it is natural for them to curl when touching... Made me feel a whole lot better... Ok end of my saga for this morning...
All the pictures are just beautiful.... I love looking at them...
Hugs,
Susan

Hi Kim;
I tried to reply this am but this stupid computer would not let me, you know i have vista now & realllllly hate this thing. oh well. that does look like a seed pod. good luck with it.if they are sterile there will be nothing in the pod.anyway looks like you will be haveing fun.Susan, that is terrible to wake up to, even if it is his fault. lol glad they fixed it.
mrsbonnie

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Bonnie,
You and me both.. I just could not figure where my money went... I knew I bought some plants but a couple thousand worth I don't think so...LOLOL Bonnie I am also running on Vista and it may take awhile but you will get use to it really you will...Oh you have dmail...
Hugs,
Susan

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I am such a slow learner that I had the computer tech who builds computers put both vista and windows on the computer (LOL)......I rarely use vista and I don't want to learn...........

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

i have windows also, but i did have windows xp before & then my son who does computers also put vista in for me as the others will soon be obsolete, but i hate vista.
bonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I know but I dread learning.............it will really be a challenge for me.........I have started playing a little on Vista but always go back to Windows.........

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I think I remember what you told me to do in this situation, Bonnie, but I want to check it out again with you. I had a Jack Evans Purple sinningia. After it bloomed I took a cutting maybe too soon as the tuber went dormant today!

The cutting appears to be taking.............first the giant tuber and remind me what to do with it ...........

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is the cutting with new growth in the center?

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Here is all the fun I need to be happy...........finding strep leaves of plants I have never even heard of...........check out first bloom on Franken Jane Elisabeth

Thumbnail by gessiegail
Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi Gail;
Take the tuber & put it in a small plastic bag with a little vermiculite or pearlite, then stick it in a brown paper bag & put it in a closet or somewhere it's dark . after a few weeks check to see if there is new growth.also when you take a top cutting , always leave a little stem on the tuber, or it could become a blind tuber & will never sprout.
bonnie

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I didn't mean to break the stem but it broke off anyway.........so we will just have to see what happens.......it does have a lot of roots on it..............
Thanks so much for your help, Bonnie!
