I was taking a picture of something else and this dragonfly just stopped by for a second. It was in the full sun, so the dragonfly's body looks very metallic. Maybe it is, I have a very hard time identifying things using guides. Your help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jenny
CLOSED: Which dragonfly?
It is indeed risky to attempt dragonfly i.d.s from a single image. If I had to guess, this might be an eastern pondhawk (Erythemis simplicicollis) whose abdomen has not completed turning blue. See http://pick5.pick.uga.edu/mp/20p?see=I_JP560&res=640 for a mature example.
Yes, I think you're right. Thanks for the reference to the UGA/USGS sites. Some of the other sites had such vivid colors on the pictures of the male eastern pondhawk I never even considered it as a possibility. I see the female fairly often, I guess I just never noticed the male before.
Thank you.
