a lady in my building knows I'm a gardener. She was given a gorgeous Lily bouquet which she left with me before leaving on vacation. They are still in bloom with more buds opening after over a week. The stalks are still mostly green
has anyone ever rooted the cut flower stalks? These are so gorgeous, I've never seen lilies this bold colored and huge flowered. It kills me they were already cut off!
I'm thinking of trimming up few leaves, cutting off the remaining blooms, and giving the stalks a fresh cut. Then scoring up a couple inches and putting that part in Rootone. Putting the stalk in wet sand. Someone suggested I also put the stalk into a potato and putting all of that in the sand, so the stalk would have an energy source.
I don't know Lilies, but have some growing in my rose bed, so I know some grow here.
Suggestions?
Can cut stalks of Lilies be rooted?
I have snapped off stems and stuck them back into the soil and a few of them rooted and produced bulblets, so.....nothing ventured, nothing gained. I'd say go for it what have you got to lose.
think these stalks should be treated as I listed, or should I just put them directly in soil?
I agree with removing the remaining buds so no energy is spent on flowering, I'm not familar with the scoring technique or the potato, so can't give any advice. I myself would just remove some of the lower leaves and dust with rootone and place in moist sandy soil in the shade. If you have more than one stem of each you could try diffferent methods and see which works or works the best. I will say that the best luck I've had has been with lilies who have broken off at or below the soil line so they already want to produce stem roots in that area.
