I'm doing a wildlife garden in my backyard and want to plant all kinds of berrying shrubs. Half the space will be a woodland garden, and gets part shade already. But of course part of that area is a bit more shaded than other parts, and if I can stick any of these in that more shaded part I'd love to.
Anyone have experience with these in shade? I'm in z4 if it matters.
Vaccinium (Blueberry & Cranberry)
Viburnum
Ilex - Winterberry Holly
Amelanchier (Serviceberry)
Sambucus (Elderberry)
Aronia (Chokeberry)
Just how much shade - berrying shrubs?
All of those will do well in shade, I'd guess Amelanchier and Aronia the least tolerant but even they will take a fair amount.
Resin
That's a good starter list, evie.
I'd add to it any Cornus (dogwood), Crataegus (hawthorn), and Lindera (spicebush) that are native up your way.
Thanks guys. Now I just need to find space for them all :)
