I started a few jacaranda from seeds, and now they are about 1, 1 1/2 feet tall. When should I transplant them to their final location? What size should they be, and what season is the best?
Thanks
Claudia
When to transplant Jacaranda?
I don't know your weather very well, but I don't think it ever gets super cold, so I'd probably choose the season that has the best combination of cooler weather and rain. As far as size--that depends on how cold your winters get. If you're on the edge of where these trees are hardy, then I'd wait until they're pretty good size, and also adjust your planting time so that they have time to get established before really cold weather comes. But if your winters are very mild and you're not even close to the limit on hardiness, then you can plant them when they're smaller. I don't know where you've been keeping them up until now, but particularly if you've had them indoors , then before you plant them out you'll need to gradually adjust them to the outdoor conditions--put them outside for a little while then bring them back in, and gradually increase the time they spend outside until they're outside all day. Or if they're currently outdoors but more shaded, then you'll need to follow the same procedure to adjust them to being in more sun.
It never freezes here, and I believe this is the equivalent of a 10b zone. I would say the coldest night would be around 5C.They are all outside in small containers in full sun, and it is pretty hot. They are doing very well. It only start to rain around November, so I believe this would be the right time.
Thanks a million!
Yes, that would probably be the best time then, that's the same time that's good to plant here but I wasn't sure if your rainy season was the same time as ours. If it never freezes there then you should be OK, but for the first couple years it wouldn't hurt to pay attention to the weather and if you do by chance get some frost, you might consider protecting the plant overnight on those coldest nights. Once it's a little older though it should do fine even with a little chillier temperatures (I have one that I'm growing in a container in an area that does get cold but is protected from getting frost on the leaves, and it's been fine even though we do drop below freezing sometimes--it sometimes drops its leaves if it gets too chilly but it always comes back in the spring)
