I need to plant an arbutus tree

Victoria BC, Canada

I have an arbutus tree in a plastic bucket and it's growing away very nicely, but I think I should plant it before (and if) we get any warm weather around here. It's only a 12" bucket and I think it might have been plunked in with no particular purpose in mind. It has a boston fern for a companion. I've heard these trees are tricky because they hate change. Does anyone know about arbutus trees? Thanks

You're right about them not liking change. Do you have the Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) or the native Arbutus (Arbutus menziesii)? From my experience they do best in sandstone/gravel mix with some peaty soil. The roots shouldn't be disturbed when planting and they don't like being handled. Give it a bit of moisture this summer but not too much. The best time to plant it is cool weather like this.

From what I know of the previous owner I think it must be the native variety. I will plant it just as you suggest, and I'll simply remove it from the pot, fern and all, and put it in the ground. If I can do it by handling the fern and not the tree it might work. Thank you for your help. We live on a river that is a mix of salt and fresh water, so if it takes to the transplant it should be happy.
