once in another forum bad things happened and i have been here from almost the beginning. we lost that forum for awhile. Dave chose to shut it down. and it stayed shut down. was reopened and shut down agian. was not on here for awhile.

i wont say which one but alot of bad things happened on it and i would hate to see this one end up in the same fate.

alot has went on that others have left it already and i barely post myself in this one anymore.

morning glories are a love of many people and people who grow them love to share their knowledge of them

but this bickering and all this fighting on here and my gosh i see this one going down the road the other went in.

that forum is still here but wasnt for awhile. it was missed and now after a time and firm rules is back. maybe this one will need those rules too but i hate for this forum to go.

please remeber this forum is a gift and privalegde and can be easily taken away and for that i would be sad as i love morning glories and know others do too. this is a forum for knowledge of the growing of them for old and new alike.

a flower is a precious gift as Daves is. something to cherish

I got a dmail that the thread was removed.

It is very disappointing what has happened to this forum. That's all I am going to say.

I got a Dmail as well. How sad how things are so censored here. Big brother is watching. People taking sides and administration deciding what stays and what goes. I thought this was a free country with free speech. I am so disgusted by what just happened on this forum it's disappointing beyond measure.

Precisely, Ron! I couldn't agree more.

Amen to that Ron!

Unfortuanatly Elizabeth "Free Speech" hurts people...I see that happening here, having to walk on eggshells is no fun...Let's just stick to the love of growing and enjoying morning glories and keep money and selling out of here. The best things in life are shared and given away.

"It happens in a flash,
but the memory of it last forever.
It can not be borrowed or stolen, and it is if no earthly good until it is given away.
So if in your hurry you meet someone who is too weary to smile leave him one of yours, for none needs a smile quite as much as he who has none to give...

(Zone 7a)

Ronnie, I agree with you and hope you'll forgive me for making one exception:

When some people smile all the way to the bank (and the flower pot while they're at it), it's not always benign around here. Elizabeth, I am very sorry about the encounter you had on this forum, yesterday.

Hello Everyone
I am not new to DG. I came to this forum because I am thinking about planting morning glories on an arbor. Anyway, for the first time last night I came across a post where some folks got into a disagreement related to selling seeds that were traded etc. etc. A few other times in different forums tempers have flared and things got tense. Each time I thought "I wonder if I have ever offended anyone?" or -- "I wonder what the rule is (etiquette) about this or that on DG. So..my question is: Is there a place to go on DG where this info can be found? Some specific things that have crossed my mind: Is it proper to just pop in with a comment without an intro saying "Hi Dorothy here"? Some folks intro themselves by saying "I hope you don't mind my joining this thread" but I think that the entire DG site is based on folks coming and going and sharing and joining and leaving the discussions. So I don't start my first post that way. Sometimes I see that when a post is edited - the author says "edited to ...correct this or that or to make more clear or something to that effect. Is it bad manners to edit without saying why? I had not thought about doing that ..it is always for clarity or punctuation but I do wonder if I am being rude or not following acceptable practice. I received a D Mail from a member telling me I should not have used her name in the post (I had learned it from a D Mail she sent me) and I felt so bad because in retrospect - I realized that I goofed. I was grateful for her reminder and lesson. I felt no resentment only regret that I didn't figure that out for myself. I have read posts that sounded very harsh (not personal attacks but directed at the garden quality, choices the poster made, "your garden doesn't look cohesive --because it isn't" etc, .) but I truly felt like it wasn't meant that way. I am thick skinnned but I realize that folks have different sensitivities. Bottom Line - I would appreciate a place to go to become informed about the specifics of etiquette about sites like DG where folks gather etc. etc. I feel very secure in the "real world" dealing with folks on a professional as well as personal level..but kind of shakey sometimes in these forums and find that I go to trouble to do or say or clarify so as not to hurt or offend or ignore previous posters. And, I worry that I may have done or be doing something not generally accepted or polite. What do you think? Is there an area for that sort of information?

Pretoria, South Africa

missingrosie,
I am usually lurking because I don't want to step on other people's toes. Glad you asked.... DG is such a wonderful place - my husband finds my addiction very amusing (luckily!!) I come here first thing in the morning (before I had my first cup of coffee) and it is the last place I visit before going to bed. I know - Hi, I'm Elsa and I'm a DG Addict.... What can I say? Gardening is addictive.

Princeton Junction, South Korea(Zone 6a)

I'm so sick and tired of this bickering and nonsense. I renewed my membership recently after 2 years and to see the drama and hostility amongst members is saddening. Imzadi, I too, like you wish this place to be a fun and educational place where people can share their knowledge without walking on eggshells. However, everyone is going to have to work together or like you suggested, come up with forum rules if necessary, to keep the peace. I love gardening and have been playing in the dirt since the age of 7. I've loved morning glories ever since I first saw them in my grandfather's backyard in Korea at the age of 3. They were huge, dark red blooms that were almost as large as my face. LOL. Ever since then, they've been my first love and a passion of mine. Let's hope we can keep this forum a place where everyone can share their first love and passion without having to walk on eggshells or create drama.

and keeping talking about it and bringing it up isnt helping keep this forum open either.

i wrote my post as a warning that if it all keeps up we will lose this forum. its happened before and can agian.

yes people feel wronged and things have said things and done things to each other but in the end

once seeds or flowers leave your hands unless truely registered to you they are theirs to do with what they want.

you cant control them once they gone from you and how much you believe or what to its still theirs once you give them.

please lets make this forum happy and learning of glories agian not of bickering and hatered and fighting.

we all love glories

(Zone 7a)

Missingrosie, it's nice to meet you. Anyone who asks the kind of questions you ask will be a great asset on any forum simply because of the way you already are, I harvested too many rose silk morning glories last summer - would you like some? anyone else?

Karen

Pretoria, South Africa

Karen, I would love some . Please let me know if I have anything you'd be interested in.

Elsa

(Zone 7a)

Alrighty, Elsa, they're yours - just sent you a postscript

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Elsa - nice to 'meet' you - I laughed when I read your post because MY husband says the same thing. He wants to know what it is about that 'flower and bushes' site that I find so fascinating --I just tell him it is DAVE! (Sorry Dave...)(Dave may remember that when I was a newbie I asked if Dave were real - I figured he had passed on and this site was created to honor him) (Sorry Dave). Anyway, I check it before I head to the hospital in the morn and last thing in the evening too. Karen nice to meet you too. The short answer is yes, I would love some seeds. The long answer is I would not want to waste them. Summer is almost here, we are having a drought and just today it was 95+ degrees (a guess but it did get to 99 this week.) Also, we have deer and rabbits that actually come up to the house and look in the windows - so not too much is safe. IF you think the seeds won't go to waste under these conditions - I would love some. As I said before I have been researching morning glory because I want to grow on an arbor. Tell me how to go about getting you the postage etc. Thank You. Dorothy

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Dorothy - I, too, like you wanted MGs to grow on an arbor. Here is a photo of a beautiful dark pink/reddish cultivar called Kohkan. I don't have seeds for this one yet, but do have some seeds left over from the Fall MGs. D-mail me if you are interested. And of course that invitiation is extended to anyone. :-)

Any time I sit in front of the pc, DH asks me what's going on in the gardening world.

(Zone 7a)

Dorothy, in my garden, rabbits and deer have devoured many plants - including morning glories when they could get to them (although someone did post that the deer didn't bother the mgs in her garden). Soooo - why not grow some in containers indoors or in a protected place while you fence in an area where you'd like to grow plants attractive to deer? I'll send you some seeds - even if something happens to them, it'll still be a learning experience (of which I have had too many, myself lol).

And, if you want to grow them indoors on an arbor, here's how one DG gardener made an indoor garden with an arbor that I'm sure would look infinitely better with morning glories on it - http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/760/ . The foregoing might only be in our dreams for many of us, but there are some more doable, threads and posts about trellising in the sticky index, too, under TRELLISING - although mainly for outdoors - lots of porch ideas there.

Anyhoo, I've written a section for the sticky index on growing mgs in containers (but am trying to muster a few more sections before I edit/add to that sticky since (to my knowledge) we're only allowed 7 edits a day on DG). So, I'm sending it to you via dmail in a minute. Also, there are a couple of entries on pruning (how to pinch mgs back so that they stay small in their pot) under the TRELLISING and/or PRUNING section of the sticky index that you might like to look at.

Will try to hunt up some research on gardening with deer I posted a while back, as well, for the sticky index. In my garden, one of this summer's projects is to put in 10' 4" x 4" posts to which we will staple/twist tie 2 rows of wire fencing so that we wind up with an 8' tall barrier in front that looks a little bit more respectable than what we hastily put up last fall - let alone have a gate we can use instead of the front door to get from the back garden to the front. Although deer are said to be able to jump at least 15', the 8' height has worked so far for us. I'll post more about this subject later on its own thread.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Answered your D-Mail Karen. Thanks Again. Tell me how I can repay you for postage etc.

I do have a porch it is small but it has a cedar post that is pretty 'hairy' with crevices etc. for climbing. I could put a pot at the base. The deer can't get up there.

Not practical to fence in - would cost too much. If I bring it in closer to the house it would be impractical for getting in and out. Hard to explain. I did request a estimate for a 10 foot fence 20 x 30 foot fence (with a gate) and wire laid in a trench to prevent the voles/rabbits etc -for veggies. The price for that little space was incredible (to me) - almost $3000. It shocked me because we are talking about deer fencing - covered wire basically - with steel corner posts. Nothing fancy. So we will do it ourselves come spring.

Pretoria, South Africa

Hi Dorothy,
Nice to meet you too... hope to see you around more. I can't believe how much I've learned about MG this past year since joining DG.

Please everybody, keep the photos coming. It surely helps me getting through this unexciting Winter time. Don't have all that much going on in the garden ;)

Elsa

(Zone 7a)

Dorothy - we are "paws-on", too, when it comes to making anything in the garden. We have been lucky that our efforts could accumulate over a long period of time (and that we started when we were young) - would not have been possible physically if we had had to move around a lot & redo each time.

Elsa, you do not want a pic of our current deer fence out front - or at least I don't want you to have that pic - lol

Pretoria, South Africa

LOL! Luckily we don't have "pests" like that eating away at our plants.... no squirrels either and luckily the rabbits keep to their part of the green belt. I think my doggies has something to do with that. But come to think of it, even on the farms you don't here the people complaining about rabbits eating the flowers - maybe they just don't know how tasty some can be?! Good thing though. I know vegetables are eaten sometimes, but once again luckily not mine.. Would REALLY be upset!

Try growing a MG vine indoors, Elsa, on a small trellis in a container. It's pretty easy and the vine will give you flowers. Great way to pass through the winter.

Joseph

Pretoria, South Africa

Hi Joseph,
I thought they would get very leggy. I assume they need enough sun? My house is rather cool (only one room gets sun) - around 66 deg F. Will that do it? Otherwise I can take some outside everyday, and bring them back inside later on.... Maybe I must put some in the soil and see what happens.

E

You can supplement the sun with a lamp, but try them out on natural light first. They ought to do ok, just won't grow fast I suspect with the cool temperature.

Elsa,
I grew a Heavenly Blue morning glory indoors last year in front of a shaded south facing window. I started it in March, I think, and it lasted until sometime in October...

Joanne

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

That's pretty amazing Joanne! I have heard that Heavenly Blue lasts a long time for an annual. It's really beautiful!

MG vines here last an average of 3-4 months. Then they either get too much heat, get diseased, or get chewed up by a pest. I don't mind though, because then I start a new group of vines! :-) I imagine that I could probably get 3-4 grow-outs per year. My first grow-outs have probably another month to go and then will start winding down. I don't know how I am going to top this current group of vines! But I am already making my list for the next set of seeds to try. I have some more crosses that I want to grow out from my own garden and from Antoinette! And lots of great seeds from everyone here! (I need to finish updating my Garden Diary.) I wish more of y'all here would post photos in your Garden Diary, too. When you get seeds from me, you can jump on my diary to see what they most likely will look like. Or figure out what crossed with what! LOL!

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Your Heavenly Blue looks great, Joanne! I must admit, though, that when my Wedding Bells turned out to be Heavenly Blues, I pulled them . . . and I replaced them the other day with some fujishibori seedlings.

Becky - again with the similarities! First my egg gourd vines got eaten by those darned cucumber beetles, then those gold bug things started eating my mg leaves, but now I notice while I was out watering just now that the lower half of my Heian no Izumi leaves are all turning yellow! They were NOT like that this morning . . . I suppose it could be combination of wind and sun . . . but if I can't fix them tomorrow with the smelly concoction, I've already got other seeds lined up for that pot! And I will try to do something with my diary . . . I've been really bad with that. Never been a good diary kind of person.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Nichole - I mainly use my garden diary (blog) so that when I have seeds to trade, I can give folks the link where I list them all on one page of my blog and then you can click on individual cultivars from that page. That way traders can see what the blooms and vines look like. There are so many MG cultivars and NOIDs that it's hard to know what is what if you are a newbie or someone like me who it would take a lifetime to know them all. I'll never be like Ron ... I'm too old for my memory to file it all in my little aged brain. LOL!

Here is what my current grow-out diary blog looks like. I am still adding cultivars with photos that I am growing out from this group of seeds. I put the date on the tab of the page so that I know which grow-out it is. Then it's like shopping for eye candy blooms! LOL! I don't write a whole lot with each photo. I figure the photo says a thousand words! :-)
http://davesgarden.com/community/blogs/t/beckygardener/8813/

It is very helpful to anyone that wants to see what I have for a seed trade. And it's great too if I want to discuss a particular cultivar. I can just link right to my blog for photos. I don't remember details of different vines, so the blog helps jog my memory. (Excuse my french, but ... Old age sucks!)

Toronto, ON(Zone 5b)

0_0 never knew you're not supposed to mention people's actual names on threads/forums. Just pondering on how I write messages on Dave's. I was taught to address people by their names because this was a form of respect...not the same on the web eh? I apologize to those I have offended in any way.

Nonetheless I never encountered any agresiveness on DG, unless I just didn't notice it or didn't go through my noggin. lol. I haven't actually talked to "mean people". I think most arguements arise from misunderstanding and expectations - sometimes people expect too much you know?

Eliz

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Eliz - I do address folks by their first name, but never list their last name. And some first names are just much easier to type than their screen name. LOL! I think we are okay addressing folks by their first name. ;-)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Eliz, I use first names too when I know them that is!! LOL If someone doesn't want there first name used they will either not sign off with it or gently explain that they prefer their screen name.

I for one think we have a great bunch of people on this forum!!
