There are a number of moths that fly and hum and feed from flowers VERY much like hummingbirds. Here are a few of the more common ones; the first one has orange spots, maybe your moth:

This is what Tobacco hornworms grow up to be....
If you grow tomatoes, you have probably seen the caterpillar on your vines....
I always try to tell people to grow "extra" plants just for them.
