Skimmia needs help

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Does skimmia get leaf burn in too much sun? My male has something that looks like leaf burn. The female is planted about 3' away, but in more shade. She is fine. Should I move him?

Plant Files lists them as part to full shade, so I expect too much sun would make them unhappy. Without knowing exactly how much shade yours is in and seeing a picture of the leaves though it's hard to say whether that's what is wrong with yours or not, although if the one in more shade is looking fine I think it's a strong suspect.

Thanks, Ecrane. This bed doesn't really get sun until around 4 pm, so I thougth they'd be OK there. I'll get photos.

What are skimmias doing in your neck of the woods?
I thought they were more tender!
Do you have to protect them?

It's probably too hot at 4pm. I've seen them do this in the greenhouse.

Weerobin, No, they were rated for my zone. (I can feel your Zone Pushing itch just reving up!) They fruit and flower and grow beautifully. I don't protect them. A friend, who is a master gardener, can't grow them at all. Maybe it's my microclimate.

Growin, Do you think it will recover? I still have some small shrubs to go into that bed. Maybe they will block the sun. There is a hydrangea planted back by the female, I could have them switch places. What do you think?

Stormy, you're reading my mind!
You must have been just faking that 'been down that road' attitude a while back...
Looks like you're a zone creeper just like the rest of us!
Regardless, you can bet I'm ordering a skimmia as soon as I can get my hands on one!

Weerobin, I swear they are rated for 6b. I have given up on trying the impossible! I got them 2 years ago at HD or Lowes. You have to get both sexes for fruit. The fruit is beautiful and lasts all the way through spring

I'm all over it.
2 Skimmia's are heading my way!

Weerobin, GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I'd use scissors but until the new leaves come out, that's what they'll look like. There is a type which doesn't need male/female and it'll flower & fruit - Skimmia japonica subsp. reevesiana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1447/

Growin, That's very interesting and beautiful. PF says it's only good to zone 7, but all of the zip code reports, including one that I think is mine, are 6 and lower. Sometimes those plant labels from HD & Lowes only give part of the name and are misleading.

I will trim the leaves and hope for the best. Thank you.
