Since so many people have to use google, can't admin fix the search feature here?
Should we "sticky" the Roll Call thread?
That's a good question to ask over in the DG forum. I think Dave may have something underway to improve searching, tagging, etc... but I don't know where he's at with it.
It's been talked about and I know Dave worked on it some. It's still awful. Hey, Critter, did you see my post about the free shipping today only on Hazzards' seeds? I think it was you who ordered from them before.
ooohhh... I missed that. Going there now! Thanks.
I hadn't really looked at this thread as I didn't really care one way of the other. Although I agree that we don't want to have it get pushed back too far and lost. I don't think one or two stickies at the top is too distracting. I think some of the stickies on some of the specific plant threads have a lot of good info but generally I don't bother reading them. I remember when I first became a DG member and was first exploring the site I looked at all the stickies and a new DG member might come into the Mid-Atlantic Region might do the same.
I love the roll call thread and really enjoy those introductions. I try not to comment on the thread to keep it chatter free but find it hard not to give a welcome and comment. I wonder sometimes how new members who have posted their info feel when after they post they get a weak welcome from a few members. In stead of a warm outpouring. I know the goal is not to get too chatty on that thread but I often wonder if new members might feel unwelcome. I remember well my first tentative posts waiting to see if anyone would talk back to me. Holly
I think when the roll call thread gets too long again, I can just do the same thing I did when the current one went up ... copy & paste the introductions at the top of a new thread.
Thanks Critter now I won't feel so limited in my welcoming. But I will still try to keep down the extra chatter.
More eyes will see the discussion of somebody's gardens, plant questions, etc. if it happens elsewhere than on the roll call thread, anyway.
Maybe when we offer our welcomes, we should suggest that they post photos and questions about their blooms on our current bloom thread and provide the link. Or else an invitation to start a thread with photos of their gardens, or just a general invite to join in on any of our discussions.
Nice idea Stormyla,
Thanks, Holly. Maybe an invitation to start a thread and post photos would intimidate many new members. I know that many people don't know how to do either intially. Maybe just an encouragement to feel free to jump in on any of our discussions at any time would be best.
Good point Stormy...always does my heart good when a newbie is made comfortable enough to ask for guidance instead of suffering in silence.
Here's a suggestion. I used to do this, in fact it's how Larlienda ended up in the forum. Check the new members list every day. When you see someone from our area, send them a d-mail inviting them to join us in Mid Atlantic.
Hart, When I first started chatting on DG, 3 years after joining, I looked up every member in my immediate area. Turned out there were 6 or 8. I sent everyone a Dmail introducing myself. Only Cottonpicker answered. Don't know if any of you have ever "met" him. He's a very interesting older fellow who spearheads the community vegetable garden at a massive assisted living retirement community near here. We've had a very nice correspondence and he doesn't even grow a flower!!! You'll often encounter him on the farm & veggie threads. Some people just don't want to be bothered. But your point is well taken and certainly might do some good.
