I wanted to know if any of the tree experts can help me with this? This is a little Alberta Spruce that I have in a big pot. It has ...what I guess...is a mutated branch on it. What would cause this?
Thanks.
Alberta Spruce with a strange branch
Reverting to type . . . DAS is a dwarf, juvenile mutation, and fairly commonly a shoot or two 'grows up', changing to normal adult growth.
Resin
Thanks Resin! I had it backwards then. Would you just leave it alone, or cut it out?
If you want to keep it as the dwarf form, cut it out.
Personally, I prefer the full-size tree so if it was me I'd let it grow ;-)
Resin
So you are saying the whole tree will revert if I leave it?
If you leave it, that branch will steadily develop into a new White Spruce tree. Could get quite large, and will shade out the remaining branches that stay dwarf. There's also the possibility that additional branches of the dwarf will develop adult growth, giving a multistemmed tree.
Resin
Well thank you very much for the information, Resin! I appreciate it! I think I will leave it, just to see what will happen. I have blue spruce, and Norway spruce...why not a white spruce!! Thanks again!
