This guy just looked like a big fly when I took the picture (set on macro). But when I loaded it into my computer, I was surprised by the coloring on the head. Does anyone know what it is?
CLOSED: Some kind of fly?
This is a horse fly (Diptera: Tabanidae). The striped appearance of the eyes is quite common in this family - see http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/861/45037986.JPG and V for other examples.
Thanks, Suunto!
Fantastic shot bebop!
Closer still, look at Hybomitra difficilis

I don't know enough to say for sure it is this exact species, some need to be put under a microscope to determine to species level. Another very similar is H. lasiophthalma

http://www.insectimages.org/browse/genus.cfm?id=Hybomitra
I think you could safely say it is a Hybomitra sp.
