You mix two cups of dolomite lime into the top four inches of mix and then add two cups of fertilizer in a two inch strip down the middle or along the side depending on what you are growing? Never mix them altogeather. Let the roots reach for it. You should add some fresh mix every time as you will lose some when removing old plants and as far as lime is concerned as long as you use dolomite, it won't burn. Also it contains a lot of minerals.
Earthbox Corn 08
I went to Lowe's and found Super Bloom, but the numbers aren't the same. Not sure if I bought the right product.
This is Super Bloom, by Green Light. the numbers are 12-55-6. Not the same as you had mentioned.
If this isn't it, if you have the manufacturer I can probably have the small hardware store order it for me as they did the last product.
I'll double check.
Just ordered 5 more earthbox without the mix. These informations are very helpful. I can't wait for the weather to cool down a little so that I can be outside gardening.
Mim: Where did you order them from? I'd love to get a couple more, but the cheapest I have found is a store in Tampa at $40.00 each.
I ordered it from earthbox.com. They give a discount certain quantities, but the shipping charge was almost 40, OUCH!
My husband said he would build a few of these EB's for me. It's a mater of "when"....
Am a FIRM believer in the EB's, have seven in which I grow a variety of things (tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, etc.) with great success. Have planted corn in them: started seeds in "root trainers" in May, transplanted seedlings out in early June, was eating fresh corn by mid-August that was out of this world! The EB's did need reservoir filling twice a day, found..at seasons end..there was no way to reuse the soil again the following year as box was nothing but corn root systems, came out in one nice big block! Aerial roots had even extended down thru bottom grate (which was completely engulfed with them), looked like they'd been grown hydroponically..and I only had 8 plants in the box! Corn's a water hog for sure, but the eating is SUPER when grown this way. And yes: winds knocked the corn box on it's face, more than once, even tho' it was weighted down with ROCKS (you must live in Wyoming to "appreciate" WIND). Pretreated soil with Espoma pelleted lime a few weeks in advance of planting EB, used Super Bloom as "strip" fertilizer and watered from top, daily, as well.
The EB's shipping may seem expensive, but their design is really one-of-a-kind and they WORK. Home built copycats don't exactly fill-the-bill design-wise, results won't be the same. All I can say is: an Earthbox is an Earthbox, best thing that ever happened to the container gardener.
I agree with you ole---- especially now that corn was 4/$2.99 at my supermarket yesterday. I've not had the problem with losing a lot of mix if I keep it well watered and clean out the roots ASAP but then again different varieties may grow differently. Still, it may be a good idea to use new mix as corn depletes the mix but that depends on one's opinion or budget.
Tplant: (I've been out of town all week in Orlando) Did you get a chance to check the maker of the Super Bloom?
Also, if the mix should be changed, should I use EB mix or is there something you recommend?
