On a trip to the coast , I was able to stop in at Marietta Gardens and pick up their 10 for $25 lily special. Since then they have been sitting in a bag with water. I know, I know they need to be in the ground. So my question is...Will they grow under a Black Walnut tree? I heard that some things won't grow under Black Walnut trees because the tree secretes some kind of toxin??? I do know that I planted some Gladious and they wouldn't grow. So has anyone had luck growing day lilies under or near a Black Walnut tree?
Lily placement/Black Walnut Tree
I planted them under walnut trees this spring. They are about to bloom. No problems
so far. But its only a few months so far.
I've grown lilies under black walnuts without problems. I had them in that bed for 3 years and they increased well and seemed quite happy. You have lily bulbs sitting in water? Lilies are prone to rot, and need excellent drainage, so I'd recommend getting them out of any standing water, even if its for a short time. Are you perhaps talking about daylilies? Those tolerate more moisture, and soaking in water before planting would be good for them. I've also grown daylilies in that same bed with the black walnut, and they grew quite well too.
Daylilies have all done fine very close to my black walnuts. I tried for several years to grow lilies up there, though, and every single one died.
I have also had some other plants do well for two or three years and then decline and eventually die. The juglone doesn't always do its damage right away.
Okay I suppose I'm showing my ignorance. yes I bought Daylilies. I sure didn't know there was a difference. I'm branching out to add new plants to my yard and chose Daylilies.
Daylilies are fine under black walnut trees too. :) Just make sure they get enough sun.
Thank you everyone. I'm going to plant them right now. They will get lots of sun.
